Mumbai Indians may be out of the Indian Premier League 2026 playoff race, but their young star Tilak Varma continues to prove why he is the heart of the team’s future. In match 58 in Dharamshala on Thursday, May 14, Tilak guided Mumbai to a thrilling six-wicket victory over Punjab Kings, chasing down 201 with just one ball to spare with his unbeaten 75 off 33 balls. And, after winning, he dedicated the victory to his mentor and former skipper, Rohit Sharma.
The “45” Gesture: Tilak’s Tribute To Rohit Sharma
Moments after hitting the winning runs off Xavier Bartlett, the cameras recorded a beautiful moment on the field. Tilak was seen looking directly into the Mumbai Indians dugout, searching for Rohit Sharma. Once he caught Rohit’s eye, Tilak signaled with his hands, flashing four fingers on one hand and five on the other, forming the number 45, which is Rohit Sharma’s jersey number.
Rohit’s reaction was equally heartwarming as the Hitman was seen beaming with pride in the dugout before walking out to the middle to wrap Tilak in a warm hug.

In post match events, Tilak admited, “I was dedicating this innings to Rohit brother. I was showing “four five”(45) with my hand so that he would understand. I love Rohit brother.”
Fans on social media found this gesture to be sweet and emotional. One of them said, “Honestly Tilak verma is very loyal towards Rohit Sharma.”

In the post match interview, Sharma showered 23-year-old with appreciations and praises. “That was a special knock from Tilak. I’ve always said he is a big-match player, and he proved it again today. To play with that kind of maturity and strike rate (75 off 33) under pressure, he showed incredible temperament. He is turning into a reliable finisher for us,” Rohit said.

PBKS vs MI—A Clutch Finish In Himalayas
The visitors, the Mumbai Indians, won the toss and opted to bowl first. However, the Shreyas Iyer-led Punjab Kings, who were coming on the back of a four-match losing streak, managed to set a daunting target with a team total of 200/8. For Mumbai, who were led by Jasprit Bumrah yesterday in the absence of Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav, the chase was far from easy on a Dharamshala surface that showed variable bounce.
After Rohit Sharma fell for 25 and Ryan Rickelton departed for a 48, the pressure moved squarely onto Tilak’s shoulders. With Mumbai needing 72 runs in the death overs, Tilak unleashed an absolute assault then.
He targeted the experienced Yuzvendra Chahal and Marco Jansen, shifting the momentum with a flurry of sixes, one of which measured a massive 106 meters. Alongside Will Jacks, who provided a quickfire 25 off 10 balls, Tilak ensured that Mumbai crossed the finish line and posted 205/4 in 19.5 overs. His innings, laced with six boundaries and six maximums, earned him the Player of the Match award and kept PBKS rooted to the bottom half of the table.
