South Africa head coach Shukri Conrad didn’t hold back after his team’s crushing nine-wicket loss to New Zealand in the T20 World Cup 2026 semifinal on March. Speaking during the post-game press talk in Eden Gardens, Conrad brushed off any talk of his team “choking.” He just called it what it was, a complete walloping. The Proteas had come into the knockouts as the only unbeaten team, but Finn Allen’s record-breaking century blew their hopes apart. With this, South Africa’s yet another chase for their first ICC white ball trophy goes on.
Conrad didn’t waste any time shutting down the whole “chokers” tag that always follows South Africa around in ICC knockouts. There was no chance for a choke this time. The team was never ahead. They didn’t have even a whiff of victory. New Zealand’s bowlers tore through the top order before the Proteas could settle in. Quinton de Kock and Ryan Rickelton both got out in the same over to Cole McConchie, and suddenly South Africa was scrambling at 12 for 2.
Conrad didn’t sugarcoat it, but he leaned into some classic South African slang to show just how rough it was. He called it a “snotklap,” which pretty much means a smack so hard it knocks the snot out of you. That’s how completely outplayed they were.
SOUTH AFRICA'S COACH SHUKRI CONRAD AFTER SEMIFINAL LOSS Vs NEW ZEALAND:
- "I don't know if tonight was a choke. I thought it was a bloody walloping. We got our arses kicked. I think in order for you to choke, you must have had a sniff in the game. We didn't have a sniff. In… pic.twitter.com/jtsgds3QIi— Tanuj (@ImTanujSingh) March 5, 2026
The prime catalyst of South Africa's misery was Finn Allen, who slammed the fastest century in T20 World Cup history (33 balls). The right-handed batter's rampage, which included 10 fours and 8 sixes, meant that the chase of 170 was completed with more than seven overs to spare.
Jansen’s unbeaten 55 and Tristan Stubbs’s gritty 29 gave South Africa a late boost, but their score was way too low on a typical 'batting' Kolkata pitch. Now, \the BlackCaps head to the final in Ahmedabad. And, Aiden Markram and company, meanwhile, have to deal with the backlash from disappointed fans back home.
