What Are Bronco And 2K Tests? Inside BCCI’s New Fitness Rules For Team India Cricketers

The BCCI is set to tighten fitness standards for Team India cricketers by introducing the Bronco Test and 2K Run as key selection benchmarks. The move is aimed at improving endurance, reducing recurring injuries and creating a uniform fitness framework across all formats. Here's everything you need to know about the Bronco, 2K and Yo-Yo tests, how they work and why the BCCI is making them central to player selection.

BCCI: Indian cricket is entering a new era where fitness could become just as important as form. There are fears over the continued injuries to a handful of top-line players and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is said to be planning to impose stricter fitness standards through its Center of Excellence (CoE). Players will be required to meet minimum benchmarks in the Bronco Test and 2K Run to qualify to be eligible for national selection in the proposed system. The Yo-Yo Test continues to be a familiar feature in the fitness culture of Indian cricket, but the introduction of the Bronco and the greater emphasis on endurance-based assessments are indicative of the board’s attempts to put in place a more uniform and demanding fitness framework that can match up to the requirements of modern-day cricket.

Why Is BCCI Introducing New Fitness Benchmarks?

The modern cricket calendar is becoming more demanding with international tours, bilateral series, ICC tournaments and franchise leagues giving players little time to recover. Injuries have increased in all formats as workloads have increased.

Several Indian players have been sidelined for long durations in recent years which has brought into question the adequacy of current fitness assessments. Now, the BCCI’s Center of Excellence is reportedly looking to bring in standardization in player fitness with clearly measurable benchmarks instead of depending on individual rehabilitation and workload management.

The aim is simple – to make sure that every player has the physical capability to cope with the intensity of international cricket before he takes the field.

What Is The Bronco Test?

The Bronco Test is a high-intensity running assessment designed to evaluate a player’s aerobic fitness, recovery ability and capacity to repeatedly perform under fatigue. Originally popular in rugby, it has recently become a significant part of cricket’s fitness programmes.

The test requires players to perform shuttle runs between cones placed at:

  • 20 metres

  • 40 metres

  • 60 metres

Completing all three distances forms one circuit covering 240 metres. Players must complete five continuous circuits without any rest, resulting in a total distance of 1,200 metres.

Unlike a straightforward endurance run, the Bronco Test constantly forces players to accelerate, decelerate and change direction, closely replicating the movement patterns seen during a cricket match.

What Does The Bronco Test Measure?

The Bronco Test focuses on multiple aspects of athletic performance, including:

  • Cardiovascular endurance

  • Recovery between repeated high-intensity efforts

  • Running efficiency

  • Speed endurance

  • Ability to maintain performance while fatigued

These qualities are especially valuable for fast bowlers, who repeatedly sprint into their bowling strides, and fielders who constantly change direction throughout an innings.

What Is The 2K Test?

The 2K Test, also known as the 2-kilometre time trial, is a simpler but equally demanding assessment of endurance.

Players are required to complete a two-kilometre run as quickly as possible. Rather than involving shuttle runs or changes of direction, the test measures how efficiently an athlete can sustain a high running pace over a continuous distance.

Reports suggest the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence is considering a benchmark of approximately 9 to 10 minutes for completing the run, although expectations could differ depending on playing roles.

What Does The 2K Test Measure?

The 2K Run primarily evaluates:

  • Aerobic endurance

  • Cardiovascular fitness

  • Stamina

  • Sustained running ability

  • Overall conditioning

The results help trainers assess whether players possess the endurance required for long batting innings, extended spells with the ball and physically demanding days in the field.

What Is The Yo-Yo Test?

Prior to the Bronco Test becoming the benchmark for fitness in Indian cricket, the Yo-Yo Test was the primary fitness test and it gained prominence during the reign of captaincy of Virat Kohli when fitness standards were elevated to new levels.

The test is for players to run 20-metre shuttle sprints in rhythm with timed audio beeps. The intervals get shorter as the test progresses, so the runners need to run faster and recover quickly in the short breaks.

Players now need to score over 16.5 to pass the assessment, up from 16.1.

Bronco Test vs Yo-Yo Test vs 2K Test: What’s The Difference?

All three tests test the physical condition of a player but each test looks at a different aspect of performance.

The Bronco Test measures a player’s capacity to sustain repeated high-intensity efforts with continuous acceleration, deceleration and change of direction. It is designed to test cardiovascular fitness, speed endurance and recovery under fatigue, and is therefore of particular relevance to fast bowlers and fielders who perform repeated bursts of intense activity during a match.

The Yo-Yo Test measures intermittent endurance and recovery. Players run shuttles of 20 meters to audio beeps that get faster. It’s not about going fast, it’s about bouncing back quickly between efforts. This test became the benchmark for Indian cricket during Virat Kohli’s captaincy and continues to be an important indicator of match fitness.

The 2K Test is a straightforward two-kilometre time trial that measures aerobic endurance and stamina. It doesn’t require any shuttle runs or change of directions like the Bronco and Yo-Yo Tests. Instead it assesses how well a player can maintain a good running speed over a continuous distance, thus providing coaches with a clear picture of general endurance.

Together, the three give a complete picture of a cricketer’s fitness. The Yo-Yo Test tests recovery between repeated sprints, Bronco Test simulates stop-start intensity of match situations and the 2K Run tests the endurance to maintain performance over longer periods.
