Didier Deschamps leaves the helm after nearly 14 years, having achieved monumental success. While the French Football Federation has yet to unveil Zidane as the new head coach, reports suggest that there could be a delay in handing him the contract.
Earlier in July this year, the French assembly revised the maximum annual salary cap of sports federation leaders, which is quite lower than what Zidane could earn as the national team boss. Even his predecessor Didier Deschamps reportedly had a salary ten times higher than the newly set limit.
How much Zinedine Zidane will earn as France manager?
France’s Senate-National Assembly set a maximum limit of 450,000 euros gross salary per year for all top members of the sports federation. Zinedine Zidane, who has an illustrious resume featuring three UEFA Champions League titles with Real Madrid, is expected to earn way more.
As reported by L’Equipe, the French football federation is awaiting approval from Marina Ferrari, Minister of Sports, Youth and Community Life, so that they could ensure a higher salary for Zidane. Some sources on social media claimed the Frenchman could earn €300,000 per month in base salary plus bonuses.
Why was Zidane Chosen for the job?
With Didier Deschamps leaving behind golden days, the France football hierarchy feels Zinedine Zidane will be the perfect candidate for the helm. The FIFA World Cup winner is also excited about the national team job. French Sports Minister Marina Ferrari also sees Zidane as a “good option”, though she stated that her department doesn’t decide “who the coach is.”
After losing the semi-final to Spain, Les Bleus will now wrap up the FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign with a third-place playoff against England on July 18, which will be Deschamps’ last assignment with the France national football team.
