India signed off from the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya with a strong late surge, turning what was a relatively steady start into a memorable finish. A combined 11 gold medals across Friday and Saturday took India’s tally to 21 gold, 27 silver and 37 bronze for a total of 85 medals. That made it the country’s second-best Asian Games campaign in terms of both gold medals and overall medal count, behind the record-breaking 2023 Hangzhou edition. India also finished fourth in the standings, matching its position from Hangzhou, despite sending a significantly smaller contingent of 495 athletes compared to 661 in 2023. The final days also brought several landmark achievements, including Kumkum Mohod becoming India’s first Asian Games individual recurve champion, Pranavi Urs winning the country’s first women’s golf gold, the men’s cricket team defeating Pakistan for gold and the men’s hockey side retaining its title while securing an LA 2028 Olympic berth.
The campaign also highlighted the depth and emerging talent across Indian sport. Archery produced five gold medals, including two historic recurve titles, while boxing secured three golds and wrestling improved its medal haul to two gold, two silver and two bronze. The women’s hockey team completed a historic double by joining the men as Asian Games champions, while golf also improved on its previous performance. With the Asian Games campaign now complete, India turns its attention to the next major challenge — the Asian Para Games, where the country’s para-athletes will look to carry the momentum forward.
What Lies Ahead For India After Asian Games 2026?
With the Asian Games 2026 now concluded, India’s sporting focus will remain in Japan as the country prepares for the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Para Games. The fifth edition of the continental para-sporting event is scheduled from October 18 to 24, with India expected to field around 121 athletes, including 80 men and 41 women. The Paralympic Committee of India will oversee the campaign, with para-athletics, para-shooting, para-swimming and para-archery among the disciplines expected to provide major medal opportunities.
The Asian Para Games will be held across Nagoya and other parts of Aichi Prefecture, bringing together around 3,600–4,000 athletes from 45 National Paralympic Committees. The October 18–24 event will feature 18 sports and 508 medal events, with major venues including the Aichi International Arena and Paloma Mizuho Stadium. For India, the competition offers another opportunity to build on the momentum generated by its strong recent performances on the international para-sporting stage and set a new benchmark at the continental level.
