Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma played all three matches of India’s three-match ODI series against New Zealand. The series ended with India losing 1-2 on Sunday, January 18.
In the first ODI, played at the BCA Stadium in Vadodara on January 11, Kohli scored 93 runs from 91 balls. In the second match at the Niranjan Shah Stadium in Rajkot on January 14, he made 23 runs off 29 balls. Despite Kohli’s century in the final match, India failed to chase the target of 338 runs. As a result, the Men in Blue lost both the match and the series. This was India’s first-ever defeat in a home ODI series against New Zealand.
Overall, Kohli scored 240 runs in the series, making it a strong start to his ODI campaign in 2026. However, Rohit Sharma struggled with the bat and scored only 26, 24, and 11 in the three matches.

Their next possible appearance for India will be in July 2026, provided they continue playing ODIs.
India will tour England in July for a five-match T20I series and a three-match ODI series. The ODIs will be played in Birmingham on July 14, Cardiff on July 16, and at Lord’s on July 19.
After the England tour, India will play three ODIs against West Indies at home and later face New Zealand in a three-match ODI series in New Zealand. According to the Future Tours Programme (FTP), India will also host Sri Lanka for a three-match ODI series in December 2026.

Virat Kohli delivered an impressive performance with the bat, but India could not convert it into a series win against New Zealand. Rohit Sharma struggled for runs, and India suffered a historic home ODI series loss. Both senior players will now focus on the IPL before returning to international cricket later in the year, with several important ODI series lined up in 2026.
