The NBA hasn’t seen a rookie year like this in ages. As the Dallas Mavericks push through the last leg of the 2025-26 season, Cooper Flagg has gone from top pick to headline-maker, smashing records that once belonged to LeBron James. On March 1, 2026, even though he sat out with a minor injury, Flagg still stole the spotlight. Analysts couldn’t stop comparing his rookie numbers with legends of the game.

At just 19, he controls both ends of the floor. He’s not only given the Mavericks a fresh sense of hope for the future—he’s also raised the bar for what a teenager can do in pro basketball. With his return just around the corner, the big question is out there: Are we looking at the next “King”?

Did Cooper Flagg Break LeBron James’ Records?

People started comparing Cooper Flagg to LeBron James for real on December 15, 2025. That night, Flagg dropped 42 points against the Utah Jazz, making him the youngest player ever to hit 40-plus in an NBA game. LeBron held that record for years, scoring 41 points at 19 back in 2004, but Flagg just edged him out.

Flagg's performance was something else. He hit shots from deep, attacked the rim, and made it all look easy. And it’s not just about the scoring but matching LeBron’s early playmaking, too. Game after game, Flagg shows he’s got that same all-around impact.

What Makes Cooper Flagg A Generational Talent?

ESPN’s Brian Windhorst and other analysts keep pointing out the same thing: plenty of rookies can put up points, but not many can actually take control of a game the way Flagg does. He’s got that 6'9" frame and a 7-foot wingspan, so he’s already a force on defence for the Mavericks. Right now, he’s averaging 1.2 steals and 0.8 blocks a night. Most rookies struggle to handle the physical jump from college to the NBA, but Flagg came out of Duke with a defensive IQ that’s already drawing real comparisons to guys like Kevin Garnett and Anthony Davis.

He’s turned out to be exactly what Dallas needed, i.e. a second engine for their offence. Sure, the team’s been having a rough year at 21-38, mostly thanks to injuries to big names like Kyrie Irving. But Flagg’s been the bright spot. He pushes the ball in transition, spots open shooters, and has basically turned into a point-forward. Jason Kidd seems all in on letting him run things, using every chance to speed up Flagg’s growth as a true leader on the court.
