New Zealand opening batter Finn Allen has already become a household name after his stunning hundred against South Africa in the high-stakes T20 World Cup 2026 semi-final at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Having smashed a record-breaking ton in the marquee event, it's worth exploring the right-hander's background as he strives for more success.

Born in Auckland on April 22, 1999, the 26-year-old started playing cricket professionally during the 2016 U19 World Cup but New Zealand failed to progress beyond the group stage. He then made an appearance in the 2016-17 edition of the Super Smash, followed by his List A and first-class debut in 2017. Nevertheless, the youngster was outstanding in the 2017-18 U19 World Cup, clattering 338 runs in six outings at 67.60 alongside a strike rate of 119.01.

What is Finn Allen's KKR connection?

After Allen's defining season for Wellington the 2020-21 edition of Super Smash, a tournament in which he mustered 512 runs, an IPL contract from the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), roped in as Josh Phillipe's injury replacement. Despite spending two seasons with RCB, the franchise didn't give him a cap. But the Knight Riders have seized the opportunity to rope him in ahead of IPL 2026, fetching ₹2 crore. KKR fans and the franchise themselves will be thrilled to see Allen's fearsome ball-striking ability and will hope he can forge the same with fellow countryman Tim Seifert.

A brief overview of Finn Allen's international career

Allen made his international debut in March 2021 and clobbered 71 off 29 deliveries only in his third game. It was in January 2024 that the 26-year-old hammered 137 off only 62 deliveries to announce his arrival into the international arena. It is also a T20I record for New Zealand. Having belted 16 sixes in that innings, he also drew level with Afghanistan's Hazratullah Zazai for most sixes by a player in a T20I knock. But the right-hander struggled in T20 World Cup 2024, managing only 35 runs in four innings at 8.75.

Allen still has good T20I numbers, aggregating 1654 runs in 61 innings at 29.01 and striking at a whopping 171.04. In 22 ODIs, he has 582 runs with five fifties, averaging 27.71. With age on his side, he will be a big player for the Kiwis for years to come.

Allen's net worth is likely between ₹8 to ₹10 crore.

Finn Allen obliterates unbeaten South Africa to fire New Zealand into the final

The knock that could well and truly define Allen is the 33-ball 100 against South Africa at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Chasing a tricky 170 against a solid Proteas bowling lien-up, the youngster played a chanceless knock. He needed only 19 deliveries to get to fifty and welcomed Corbin Bosch by hammering 22 off his six deliveries.

The 33-ball century is now the fastest in T20 World Cup history, going past Chris Gayle, who accomplished it off only 47 balls. He had come into the World Cup as an in-form batter too, topping the run-scoring charts in the 2025-26 Big Bash League (BBL) with 466 runs as it played a crucial role in helping Perth Scorchers lift the cup. Domestically, Allen also plays for San Francisco Unicorns, Auckland, Quetta Gladiators and Quetta Gladiators.

With Allen deciding New Zealand's date with destiny, he will heavily be under the spotlight on the night of the final in Ahmedabad.
