Flavio Cobolli lifted the ATP Mexican Open 2026 title on Sunday, March 1, defeating American star Frances Tiafoe in the final in Acapulco.
The 23-year-old Italian became the first player from his country to win the ATP 500 event in Acapulco. Cobolli secured the title in straight sets, 7–6(4), 6–4, in a 70-minute battle that featured no breaks of serve.
The opening set was tight from start to finish. Cobolli had to save a set point at 4–5 before forcing a tie-break. He fell behind 1–3 in the breaker but quickly turned things around, winning it 7–4.
In the second set Cobolli took the lead early going ahead 3–2, but the 28-year-old Maryland-born fought back to level at 4–4.
However, the Italian found another gear breaking the serve for 5–4 and then sealed the match with his 10th ace.
With the victory, Cobolli climbed to a new career-high ranking of World No. 15 in the ATP standings.

Flavio Cobolli, one of Italy’s brightest young talents, was not always destined for tennis. Born in 2002 in Florence, he initially pursued football and was a promising youth player for AS Roma.
However, his path eventually shifted toward tennis under the guidance of his father and coach, Stefano Cobolli, a former professional player.
Cobolli’s life-changing season came in 2024, when he finished runner-up at the Citi Open (ATP 500), losing in the final to Sebastian Korda.
In 2025, he made his name known under the top players by winning two ATP titles. He claimed his maiden ATP 250 crown at the Tiriac Open, defeating Sebastian Baez in the final.

Later that year, he captured his first ATP 500 title at the Hamburg Open, overcoming Russian star Andrey Rublev in the championship match.
That same season, Cobolli enjoyed his best Grand Slam performance at Wimbledon, reaching his first quarterfinal. He defeated former finalist Marin Cilic before falling in four sets to his tennis idol, Novak Djokovic.
Cobolli also played a starring role for Italy in the Davis Cup, stepping up as the nation’s No. 1 player in the absence of Jannik Sinner and Lorenzo Musetti. He helped Italy secure its third consecutive Davis Cup title by defeating Spain in the final.
