The world of cricket has witnessed many meteoric rises and devastating falls, but few trajectories are as baffling as that of former Indian prodigy Manjot Kalra. Once hailed as the golden boy of India’s youth cricket, Kalra’s career has taken its darkest turn yet. Hours before the opening match of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2026, the 27-year-old was arrested in a Colombo hotel by Sri Lankan authorities under severe match-fixing and bribery charges on July 17.
The Police Special Investigation Unit (SIU) for the Prevention of Offences Relating to Sports took Kalra into custody while he was allegedly preparing to pay a staggering ₹9.5 million ($28,700 USD) to a player to influence a match.
The Unforgettable Heroics of 2018
To understand the shockwaves this arrest has caused, one must flash back to February 2018. Under the watchful guidance of coach Rahul Dravid and captaincy of Prithvi Shaw, India clinched the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup in New Zealand. The architect of that historic final victory over Australia was Manjot Kalra.

Kalra smashed a magnificent, unbeaten 101 off 102 balls, instantly rocketing himself into the national spotlight and earning an IPL contract with the Delhi Daredevils (now Capitals).
Shrouded by Age-Fraud Controversies
However, the transition to senior cricket quickly derailed. In early 2020, just as he was looking to build momentum, the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) handed Kalra a severe one-year ban from playing domestic cricket after an investigation found him guilty of altering his birth certificate during his junior days. The age-fraud stigma heavily crippled his professional progress, leaving him on the fringes of mainstream selection and forcing him to look outside the boundary ropes for his future.
The LPL 2026 Shocker
Transitioning from a player into sports entrepreneurship, Kalra invested heavily to become a co-owner of the LPL franchise, Jaffna Kings, earlier this year.
According to Sri Lankan investigators, high-profile team players—including Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Avishka Fernando, and Dunith Wellalage—initially blew the whistle after being approached with corrupt offers around 10 days prior.
The court has ordered Kalra to remain in judicial custody until July 31. While Sri Lanka Cricket has guaranteed the tournament will proceed with a zero-tolerance policy, Kalra’s journey from a celebrated world champion to a remanded cell in Colombo stands as a chilling cautionary tale.
