Who is Murat Yakin?
Born in Basel to Turkish parents, Yakin had a decorated career as a defender. He represented Switzerland in nearly 50 international outings, while also playing for several top clubs like VfB Stuttgart, Fenerbahce, Grasshopper Club Zurich and FC Basel. The 51-year-old switched to a managerial career in 2006.
Murat Yakin Playing Career
Yakin was primarily a centre-back, but could also operate in the midfield when his teams needed him. He kicked off his professional career with Grasshopper Club Zurich and became the Swiss league champion twice. After some brief spells at Stuttgart, Fenerbahce and Kaiserslautern, Yakin moved to Basel, where he achieved some memorable feats, including multiple league titles, domestic cups and even qualification for the Champions League.
Yakin made his international debut in 1994. He retired from football in 2006 after registering 48 goals in 273 appearances at the club level. He also struck four times in the Swiss colours.
