Tony Romo is the former Dallas Cowboys Pro Bowl quarterback who transitioned into sports media to become the highest-paid NFL game analyst in television history.

His nine-year broadcasting career at CBS Sports came to an abrupt end on Friday, October 2, 2026. The network and Romo mutually agreed to part ways following his summer arrest for operating while intoxicated (OWI).

From an overlooked small-school college quarterback to the voice of the Super Bowl, here is the complete story of Romo’s rise, his record-breaking fortune, and the controversy that led to his exit.

From Undrafted Free Agent to Dallas Cowboys Royalty

Romo’s football journey began far from the NFL spotlight. Playing college football at Eastern Illinois, he went completely unpicked in the 2003 NFL Draft before signing with the Dallas Cowboys as an undrafted free agent.

He spent his early years holding clipboards behind veteran quarterbacks like Drew Bledsoe. In 2006, head coach Bill Parcells named Romo the starter, and the quarterback never looked back.

Romo played 13 seasons in Dallas, shattering franchise records once held by Hall of Famer Troy Aikman.

By the time he retired in 2016, he had piled up 34,183 passing yards, 248 touchdown passes, and four Pro Bowl selections.

The Playoff Curse: Big Stats, Brutal Heartbreaks

Despite his regular-season brilliance, Romo’s playing career was overshadowed by postseason disappointment.

He finished his NFL career with a modest 2-4 playoff record and never managed to lead Dallas past the divisional round to an NFC Championship Game.

His most painful moment arrived during the 2006 NFC Wild Card game against the Seattle Seahawks, where he fumbled a routine snap on a potential game-winning field goal.

That image followed him for the rest of his playing days, creating a reputation as an elite quarterback who could not win the big one.

The $180 Million Broadcast Revolution at CBS

Romo walked directly from the gridiron into the broadcast booth in 2017, joining lead play-by-play voice Jim Nantz on CBS Sports’ top NFL broadcast crew.

He became an instant sensation. Viewers were blown away by his ability to read defensive formations in real time, accurately calling out plays before the ball was even snapped.

That viral popularity paid off in 2020 when CBS signed Romo to a historic 10-year, $180 million contract paying him roughly $18 million per year.

The mega-deal reset the entire sports broadcasting industry, paving the way for massive network contracts across American television.

The Drop in Form and the July Arrest

Over the past two seasons, the initial excitement around Romo began to cool. Viewers and sports media critics argued that his analysis had become sloppy, unstructured, and overly reliant on repetitive catchphrases.

The real breaking point occurred off the field this summer. On July 23, 2026, Milwaukee County sheriff’s deputies arrested Romo in Wisconsin on suspicion of operating while intoxicated (OWI) after he failed roadside sobriety tests.

Romo pleaded no contest to the charges in court on September 2. CBS originally placed him on indefinite leave, keeping him off the air for the start of the 2026 NFL season.
