India National Cricket Team: India’s title-winning campaign in the T20 World Cup 2026 has come in as a blessing for Ajit Agarkar, as the chairman of the senior selection committee has asked the BCCI (Board of Cricket Control in India) to extend his tenure till the ODI World Cup of 2027, as per a report. The report in the Times of India stated that the board has already initiated the discussions around his extension; however, a final call will be taken later on.
Along with Agarkar, Pragyan Ojha, RP Singh, Ajay Ratra, and Shiv Sundar Das are the other members in the committee.
It is worth noting that Agarkar’s tenure as chief selector has been fairly successful, with India clinching three ICC trophies in the white-ball format. Since his arrival in 2023, the former Indian pacer already had an extension for a year, which was finalised before IPL 2025.
During his tenure, India have also suffered unprecedented whitewashes at home against New Zealand and South Africa.
Ro-Ko Transition
Additionally, he has managed transitions in all three formats with marquee players such as Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli stepping away from Tests and T20Is, with Ravichandran Ashwin announcing his retirement from international cricket during the India tour of Australia.
He is also recognized for his courageous decision to name Suryakumar Yadav as the captain for the India T20I team, even though all-rounder Hardik Pandya was initially considered for the position.
“One of the main issues discussed was that you want a captain who’s likely to play all the games. We think he (Suryakumar Yadav) is a deserving candidate”, said Agarkar.
I Am Thankful To Agarkar: Gambhir
Recently, India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir dedicated the team’s historic T20 World Cup triumph to Agarkar.
“I think I should dedicate this trophy to Ajit Agarkar, because he does take a lot of flak and I’m thankful for the amount of honesty he’s worked with”, Gambhir said.
Agarkar has featured in 26 Tests, 191 ODIs, and four T20Is for India as he finally rested his boots in 2007, taking a combined 349 wickets.
