The Board of Control for Cricket in India officially announced the schedule for the Indian Premier League 2026 Playoffs on Wednesday, May 6, confirming a venue shift for the tournament’s final. In a departure from the tradition where the defending champion hosts the final, the summit clash has been moved from the home ground of Royal Challenegrs Bengaluru M. Chinnaswamy Stadium to the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
Why Did BCCI Move IPL 2026 Final From Bengaluru to Ahmedabad?
According to the official statement, the final will now take place on May 31 at the world’s largest cricket stadium, marking a strategic relocation due to “operational and logistical considerations.”
“Owing to certain operational and logistical considerations, the TATA IPL 2026 Playoffs will be conducted across three venues this season as a special case.
Bengaluru was originally designated to host the Final. However, owing to certain requirements from the local association and authorities that were beyond the scope of BCCI’s established guidelines and protocols, the venue has been shifted and reassigned,” official release by BCCI claimed.Â
Big Blow To Defending Champions RCB
This decision marks a blow to the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, who, as defending champions, were traditionally entitled to a home-turf advantage for the final. The relocation is also a major disappointment for the local fanbase, especially following the tragic stampede during the team’s trophy parade last year, which had already put the city’s hosting capabilities under scrutiny.
Should the Rajat Patidar-led side qualify for the knockouts, they currently sit in second place with 12 points, they will now have to defend their title away from the familiar, high-altitude conditions of the Chinnaswamy.Â
M Chinnaswamy vs Narendra Modi Stadium – ComparisonÂ
The M. Chinnaswamy Stadium has a seating capacity of approximately 35,000 to 40,000, and is known for its short boundaries (under 60 meters) and a batter’s paradise reputation where 200+ scores are common.Â
On the other hand, the Narendra Modi Stadium is the world’s largest cricket venue, boasting a colossal capacity of 132,000, providing nearly four times the gate revenue potential for the BCCI. Tactically, while the Chinnaswamy rewards raw power hitting and offers little margin for error to bowlers, the Ahmedabad ground features much larger dimensions, roughly 73m (square) and 82m (straight) and a hit-the-deck-friendly surface that offers more balance between bat and ball.Â
