Jaminton Campaz, who made three appearances in the tournament, had a golden chance to seal the game for the South Americans late in the extra time. He, however, was unable to hit the target from close range, with gripping 120-minute action ending in a goalless draw. Switzerland had the last laugh in the shootout, winning 4-3.
After Colombia crashed out of the competition, Campaz was heavily criticised by fans on social media. He reportedly got death threats, directed at both the footballer and his family. The Colombian attacking midfielder responded to his critics in a social media post, explaining his feelings and urging respect.

Reports suggest that Campaz was left stranded in Canada before flying back to his homeland with the rest of the Colombian squad. He was even forced to restrict comments on his Instagram profile, which was filled with negative remarks, with many fans blaming him for the World Cup disaster.
Campaz, who currently plays for Argentine Primera Division Club Rosario Central, later shared a statement, denouncing death threats.
“We may think differently or feel frustration or sadness, but no passion justifies hatred or living in fear,” the 26-year-old wrote on Instagram.
“I dreamed of defending Colombia’s colors, hearing the anthem, representing millions of people, and scoring a goal in a World Cup since I was a child. Today, I can only thank God for allowing me to fulfill that dream,” he added.
The South American national has a dark history in football. After they were knocked out by the USA from the 1994 World Cup, a member of the team, Andres Escobar, was shot dead in Medellin after scoring an own goal.
Campaz Vows To Come Back Stronger
The Colombian international further wrote, “I want you to know that there was never a lack of dedication, commitment, or love for this jersey. I gave everything I had on the pitch, and I would do it a thousand times over for my country.”
“Soccer is also made of difficult moments. Today, all that remains is to learn, pick yourself up, and keep working to come back stronger,” read the end of his note.
