Why Is Hockey Not Part of Commonwealth Games 2026? Here’s Everything You Need to Know

Hockey has been excluded from the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow as organisers opted for a significantly scaled-down edition of the multi-sport event. The Games, which begin on Thursday in Scotland, will feature only 10 sports compared to 19 at Birmingham 2022. As a result, several popular disciplines including hockey, cricket, badminton, wrestling, shooting and archery have been dropped, meaning many of India's biggest medal hopes will not be in action during this year's Games.

Why Is Hockey Not Part of Commonwealth Games 2026? Hockey has been excluded from the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow as organisers opted for a significantly scaled-down edition of the multi-sport event. The Games, which begin on Thursday in Scotland, will feature only 10 sports compared to 19 at Birmingham 2022. As a result, several popular disciplines including hockey, cricket, badminton, wrestling, shooting and archery have been dropped, meaning many of India’s biggest medal hopes will not be in action during this year’s Games.

Why Has Hockey Been Dropped From Commonwealth Games 2026?

The decision to remove hockey was driven primarily by financial considerations. Glasgow stepped in to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games after Victoria, Australia, withdrew because of rapidly increasing costs. To ensure the Games remained financially viable, organisers reduced the overall scale of the event, limiting the programme to just 10 sports. Team sports such as hockey, which require dedicated venues, larger squads and extensive logistical support, were among those left out.

Why Was the Commonwealth Games 2026 Scaled Down?

The restructuring of the Games can be traced back to a troubled hosting process. After Durban lost the hosting rights for the 2022 Commonwealth Games, Birmingham moved its bid forward to stage that edition. Victoria was then awarded the 2026 Games in 2022, but the Australian state government cancelled its plans a year later after projected costs escalated sharply. Glasgow eventually agreed to host a compact version of the Games, leading to a substantial reduction in the number of sports.

How Will Hockey’s Absence Affect India?

The omission of hockey is a significant setback for India, which has traditionally been one of the strongest nations in the sport at the Commonwealth Games. Hockey was among six medal-winning sports for India at Birmingham 2022 that have been dropped from the Glasgow programme. The absence of these disciplines is expected to reduce India’s overall medal prospects compared to previous editions.

Can Hockey Return in Future Commonwealth Games?

Yes. Hockey has not been permanently removed from the Commonwealth Games. The Glasgow edition is considered a one-off, cost-conscious model designed to ensure the event’s survival after the hosting crisis. Future editions could feature a broader sports programme again, depending on the host city’s infrastructure, finances and sporting priorities, which means hockey could return to the Commonwealth Games in the future.
