Sophie Cunningham has become one of the WNBA’s most talked-about and polarizing players, even surpassing teammate Caitlin Clark in the amount of attention surrounding her. The Indiana Fever guard has found herself at the center of growing online criticism, despite playing a supporting role for one of the league’s top teams. Her increased profile comes as the WNBA continues to attract more viewers and attention in recent years, with Clark also playing a major role in that growth.

The controversy intensified on Cunningham’s 30th birthday, when supporters reportedly faced restrictions while trying to discuss or wish her well on Reddit. Her name was reportedly banned from the WNBA subreddit, adding another unusual chapter to the ongoing tension surrounding her. The incident has further highlighted the increasingly heated and divided nature of online WNBA fandom.

Why Was Sophie Cunningham’s Name Banned on Reddit?

Sophie Cunningham’s 30th birthday sparked an unusual controversy on Reddit after a fan reportedly tried to post “Happy Birthday Sophie” on the r/WNBA subreddit but was prevented from doing so. The user received a message stating, “This community doesn’t allow ‘Sophie’ in post titles.” After contacting the moderators for an explanation, the user was told the restriction was intentional. The moderators responded, “We filter content based on Sophi because it tend to bring out trolls and people that aren’t fans of the W,” before adding, “We have chosen to filter content. If you want to post freely about Sophie you can go to different sub…..You aren’t even a contributor to this sub, so I suggest you go back to the other WNBA subs. This is our decision. If you keep messaging about this you will be banned.”

The decision reportedly stems from Cunningham’s comments in an ESPN feature in July, when she said she wanted “biological men” kept out of women’s sports and locker rooms. Those remarks made the Indiana Fever guard a divisive figure within the WNBA, drawing criticism from some players and fans while also making her a frequent subject of online debate. The Reddit moderators’ comments suggest the filter was introduced because discussions involving Cunningham were attracting trolling and users they believed were not genuine WNBA supporters.

The Reddit controversy is the latest development in the backlash Cunningham has faced since making those comments. She has been booed and criticized, while protests and other public reactions have also followed. The decision to restrict her name on a major WNBA subreddit has now added another layer to the ongoing debate surrounding Cunningham and the increasingly polarized reaction to her views.

Sophie Cunningham Controversy Sparks WNBA Eligibility Debate

Cunningham’s remarks reignited debate among WNBA fans over whether transgender athletes should be eligible to compete in women’s sports. The controversy also drew trolling from former NBA players Enes Kanter and Royce White, with Kanter even declaring for the 2027 WNBA Draft and claiming he qualifies to play in the league. Under Article XIII, Section 1(a) of the WNBA Collective Bargaining Agreement, “Only players who are women are eligible to play in the WNBA.”

The WNBA has since held discussions about player eligibility, safety and the increasingly heated online discourse surrounding the issue. However, the task force reportedly did not reach an explicit definition of “woman” that could be used to create updated eligibility rules. Against that backdrop, Cunningham’s involvement in the debate has also been linked to the decision by WNBA Reddit moderators to restrict her name from posts on the forum.
