South African midfielder Themba Zwane is set to miss the remaining group stage fixtures after FIFA banned him for three matches following a nasty foul in the World Cup 2026 opener against Mexico. Zwane was shown a straight red after hitting Roberto Alvarado’s face in the Group A clash, where Mexico picked up a 2-0 victory. It was a chaotic affair in Mexico City as three players, including Zwane, were dismissed, making it a match with one of the most red cards in World Cup history.
South Africa wrapped up the game with nine men, as Sphephelo Sithole also left early. The 36-year-old Zwane, who had come on as a substitute just over 20 minutes before, looked bemused after being red-carded by Brazilian referee Wilton Sampaio, having tried to get past Alvarado on the edge of the Mexico box. The two made contact before Zwane’s hand struck Alvarado in the face.
South Africa Coach Not Happy With Zwane’s Red Card
After the match, South Africa coach Hugo Broos said he could accept the sending off of Sithole, who denied a goalscoring chance to Mexico on the edge of the area, but thought Zwane’s dismissal was contentious.
“The second red card we can discuss,” Broos said at the post-match press conference.
“It was the Mexican player who was blocking my player. But it’s the position of the referee, and we have to accept it also, but I think it was too soft to give that as a red card.
World Cup Over For Zwane? South Africa’s Qualification Scenario
Bafana Bafana, following a disastrous start, still have two games in hand. They need to overcome Czechia and South Korea in the remaining Group A fixtures to be in contention for a knockout spot. Currently, they trail at the bottom of the table. South Africa will square off against Czechia on June 18.
