WI vs SL, 1st ODI: With the 2027 World Cup on the horizon, West Indies and Sri Lanka will square off in a crucial three-game ODI series to keep themselves in contention to qualify for the mega tournament directly. Whoever wins between West Indies and Sri Lanka will get a boost in terms of World Cup qualification since the eight highest-ranked teams in the ICC rankings till March 31, 2027 will earn direct qualification for the World Cup. The remaining ones will need to compete in the qualifiers.

Sri Lanka, who are currently ranked sixth in the ICC ODI rankings, lost their most recent 50-over series that was contested against England before T20 World Cup 2026. Although the Island nation won the opening game relatively comfortably, they lost the next two to concede the series. With Kusal Mendis back as captain, the Island nation will hope to revive their fortunes in the 50-over format. Gary Kirsten’s appointment as a coach should also give Sri Lanka confidence.

West Indies, standing 9th in the ICC ODI rankings, find themselves yet again in a pickle and risk not qualifying for the 2027 World Cup, much like the 2023 edition. The Caribbeans’ most recent one-day series was against New Zealand and were swept 3-0. Shai Hope, who is a prolific run-getter in ODIs, has a big responsibility when it comes to run-scoring, was the case during the New Zealand tour. However, the Caribbeans will take some comfort knowing they will face Sri Lanka at home.

Sabina Park, Jamaica pitch report

Sabina Park hasn’t hosted an ODI since 2022 when the West Indies play Ireland. With the venue historically witnessing low-scoring games, both teams would be wary of that factor.

WI vs SL Winner Prediction: Who Will Win Today’s Match Between West Indies and Sri Lanka?

Based on the recent form, there is not much to choose between the two sides. Both West Indies and Sri Lanka have visible frailties but also have strong spin-bowling units. Hence, the team that bats better is likely to emerge victorious, keeping in mind the low-scoring nature of the venue.
