With Brendon McCullum’s ‘Bazball’ era coming to an end, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is on the lookout for a new Test head coach. The leadership transition comes after Ben Stokes and Co. endured a 2-1 defeat to New Zealand in a recent series on home soil. Since Stokes announced his retirement and McCullum departed, England cricket is now heading into a new era. Several names have emerged as the potential replacements for the New Zealand great, who took over the charge in 2022 and guided England to several memorable victories during his time at the helm.

Recent reports suggest that Justin Langer, who previously coached the Australian cricket team, could be a major contender to succeed McCullum. The ECB also contacted Andy Flower, but he has already dismissed the speculation of his return as the England Test coach.

Will Justin Langer take charge of England Test team?

Justin Langer, a Test cricket legend, enjoyed tremendous success during his time as the Australia head coach. Under his guidance, they retained the Ashes on English soil in 2019, while registering 15 wins, 11 defeats and five draws. Langer has been away from international cricket for a long time.

He has been serving as the coach of the Indian Premier League (IPL) side Lucknow Super Giants since 2023. Though the ECB has also been exploring other options, they could consider Langer, who had experience in County cricket during his playing days.

Who are the other contenders to become England Test coach?

Andrew Flintoff is another strong contender for England’s Test coaching role. Currently in charge of the England Lions and involved with the national white-ball setup, the former all-rounder already has a close understanding of the player pool. His long-standing relationship with England men’s managing director Rob Key could also work in his favour. However, Flintoff recently accepted the head coach position at Sydney Thunder in the Big Bash League.

Another name in the frame is former England batter Jonathan Trott. The 45-year-old recently ended his stint as Afghanistan head coach after guiding the side to the semi-finals of the 2024 T20 World Cup. Trott has since joined Ireland’s men’s team in a consultancy role.
