Former India batter Rahul Dravid has reportedly emerged as one of the leading candidates to become England’s next Test head coach following the dismissal of Brendon McCullum. England decided to make a change after a disappointing run in red-ball cricket, which ended with a 2-1 home Test series defeat to New Zealand.
According to reports, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has included Dravid on a shortlist of potential replacements alongside former England coach Andy Flower and ex-spinner Richard Dawson. While McCullum’s tenure as Test coach has come to an end, he is expected to remain in charge of England’s white-ball teams as the ECB begins its search for a new leader ahead of next year’s Ashes series.

According to reports, Rahul Dravid is among the names being considered by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) as it searches for Brendon McCullum’s successor in the Test setup. The reported shortlist also includes former England head coach Andy Flower and ex-England spinner Richard Dawson.
The report, however, noted that Dravid is not actively looking to return to a full-time coaching role. It suggested that England’s Test coaching position could still appeal to him because of its schedule, which would allow him to spend more time at home while continuing to work in the format he has always valued the most. The report added, “Dravid has no desire to coach full-time, but the England Test job would allow him extended periods at home and the chance to help keep alive his favourite format of the game. England, at the very least, should gauge his interest.”
Dravid brings an impressive coaching résumé, having guided India to the 2024 T20 World Cup title while also leading the team to the finals of the 2023 ICC World Test Championship and the 2023 ODI World Cup. Although India fell short against Australia in both major finals, his tenure is widely regarded as one of the country’s most successful in recent years.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) decided to end Brendon McCullum’s tenure as England’s Test head coach following a disappointing run in red-ball cricket. England’s heavy 4-1 Ashes defeat, followed by a 2-1 home series loss to New Zealand, convinced the board that the Test team needed a fresh direction and a complete reset ahead of the next World Test Championship cycle.
England’s decline came after the early success of the aggressive “Bazball” approach under McCullum. After an impressive start, the team struggled for consistency, losing seven of its final nine Test matches. The recent retirement of Test captain Ben Stokes further accelerated the need for change, leaving England without its on-field leader and prompting the ECB to rebuild the leadership structure.
As part of the overhaul, the ECB has chosen to return to separate coaching roles for the Test and white-ball teams. The board believes dividing the responsibilities will allow greater focus on each format. While McCullum’s time with the Test side has ended, he will remain in charge of England’s white-ball teams and is expected to lead them through the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup.
