With the 2026-27 season approaching, Arsenal have suffered a major blow, with their key defender William Saliba picking up a back injury while playing for France in the FIFA World Cup 2026 semi-final against Spain. As per reports, Saliba might need surgery, keeping him sidelined for four to five months. Despite managing a long-standing back issue, he started in six matches for the France national football team in this tournament. However, he was forced to withdraw from the semi-final, which Les Bleus lost 2-0.
Before leaving the pitch, Saliba reportedly said “my back is gone” twice, raising concerns over the severity of his injury. While he is almost certain to miss the FIFA World Cup third-place playoff for France, Arsenal now await the results of his tests.

After a gruelling season that saw him lift the Premier League title with Arsenal, the Frenchman made sure to be available for national duty, but his back issue seems to have worsened over time.
With Saliba potentially missing the start of the 2026-27 campaign, Gunners boss Mikel Arteta could fall short of options for a starting role at the heart of the defence. The English champions already remain concerned about two more first-team stars, Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka, who are also working on their fitness after featuring at the World Cup for England.

William Saliba’s situation might force Arsenal to make changes to their plans for summer business. It was earlier said that the London-based club would spend big to bolster their attack and midfield. However, now Mikel Arteta needs a proper replacement for Saliba. Cristhian Mosquera started as the centre-defender in the absence of the French player last season, but Arsenal can’t rely on just one option.
Jurrien Timber and Ben White could also play in the centre, but they are best suited for the right-back role. If there’s no defensive signing, Arteta could also try youngsters like Marli Salmon and Jaden Dixon.
