Wimbledon 2026: A big development has emerged about German Tennis star Alexander Zverev ahead of the massive Wimbledon 2026 final against Jannik Sinner on July 12, Sunday. Despite the ban on using phones by players during Wimbledon matches, Zverev has been seen using the electronic device on multiple occasions in this year’s Grand Slam event amid breaks. What is the reason behind allowing Zverev to use his phone?

The reason behind the same is because the 29-year-old is Type 1 Diabetic and therefore has a medical exemption to the rule and is allowed to check his phone to monitor is glucose levels. According to BBC Sport, the Grand Slam tournaments have a list of players who are diabetic and they are permitted to check their phones amid matches to check their glucose level and inject insulin, if required. BBC Sport has also reported that Zverev has a phone that contains no SIM card and it is solely used to monitor his glucose level while on court. Instead of doing the finger-prick checks, the phone can be used to read his glucose level whenever required.
Notably, the prohibition on using phones applies to all other players and that the authorities state that it must be switched off or stored away before entering the court and kept out of sight of both players and umpires. Additionally, players cannot wear smart watches or similar devices on the court. Additionally, some players have also been told to put away the fitness trackers at certain tournaments. Breaching the rules may mean “immediate dismissal from the tournament and cause a report to be sent to the governing officiating body who can initiate a formal investigation into the incident”.

Meanwhile, the Wimbledon 2026 men’s final promises to be a thrilling contest. The German had entered the final after ending British wild card Arthur Fery’s fairytale run, defeating him in straight sets, while Sinner consigned seven-time Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic in the same fashion in the semi-final. With two players at the top of their game, one can expect a neck-to-neck battle.
But Sinner holds an overwhelming lead in head-to-head contest, winning 10 games out of 14 between them. Hence, Zverev will need to play out of his skin to beat his Italian counterpart.
