Cody Rhodes wasted no time waiting for the opening bell, ambushing Gunther during his entrance and taking the fight straight to him. “The American Nightmare” repeatedly slammed Gunther into the ring apron, steel steps, barricade and announce desk before finally rolling him into the ring to officially start the match. Once the action settled, Gunther regained control with his trademark chops and heavy strikes, but Rhodes responded with a springboard cutter, a scoop slam and the Disaster Kick. Rhodes looked ready to hit Cross Rhodes before Gunther countered and shifted the momentum back in his favour.
Gunther targeted Rhodes’ leg throughout the contest, driving it into the ring post before CM Punk made his way to ringside to encourage Rhodes. The two competitors continued trading momentum, with both men dropping each other with a double clothesline before the match entered its closing stages. Gunther landed a powerbomb and later trapped Rhodes in a half crab, but Rhodes escaped, caught Gunther with a Dragon Screw and locked in the Figure Four Leg Lock.
The closing moments quickly descended into chaos when Sami Zayn stormed to ringside and attacked CM Punk, distracting Rhodes. Gunther capitalised by applying a sleeper hold, but Rhodes escaped and launched himself onto Zayn with a suicide dive. Zayn then attacked Rhodes, forcing the referee to call for the disqualification and handing Rhodes the victory. After the bell, Gunther and Zayn attempted a two-on-one assault before Punk returned to even the odds, leading to a wild four-man brawl that required officials to intervene as SmackDown went off the air.
Jade Cargill And Nia Jax Clash For A Spot In The Interim Women’s Championship Ladder Match
Jade Cargill and Nia Jax squared off in an Interim WWE Women’s Championship Ladder Match qualifier, but the contest came to an abrupt end after outside interference. Jax made a fast start by avoiding Cargill’s opening kick before connecting with a Samoan Drop and a splash for an early near fall. Cargill fought back with a spinebuster after Jax missed a leg drop, but before the match could gather momentum, Charlotte Flair stormed to the ring after taking out Michin and B-Fab at ringside. Flair then attacked Cargill, forcing the referee to disqualify Jax and award the victory—and a place in the SummerSlam ladder match—to Cargill.
After the bell, Flair attempted to injure Cargill’s arm in retaliation for last week’s attack on Alexa Bliss, but Michin and B-Fab rushed in to make the save. An angry Jax, frustrated that Flair had cost her the match, attacked Flair before leaving the ring. That gave Cargill the opportunity to hit Flair with Jaded, with Michin and B-Fab joining her in the ring as the segment came to a close. Although the match officially lasted only around a minute, it further intensified the rivalry between Cargill and Flair heading toward SummerSlam.
