The race to build an ultimate camera smartphone is not new, and Vivo is also joining the race with its upcoming Vivo X500 Ultra. Although there is no official confirmation on this, with the rumoured camera smartphone, the company might be exploring a new direction that could boost the long-range photography on smartphones.

The brand’s move shows notable evolution from Vivo’s current flagship imaging approach. Rather than depending on external accessories to extend zoom capabilities, the company appears to be evaluating a built-in solution which is designed to deliver powerful optical reach straight from the device.

Vivo X500 Ultra Camera: From Lens Extenders to Native 10x Optical Zoom

Vivo’s current Ultra flagship, the X300 Ultra, already boasts an impressive 200MP periscope telephoto camera with 3.7x optical zoom.  The combination of Zeiss-developed 200mm and 400mm telephoto extenders, it allows users to capture distant subjects while maintaining impressive details.

But, with a dedicated 10x optical zoom lens, it could reduce or even eliminate the need for additional accessories. It is expected that it will give consumers a more convenient and seamless photography experience. Whether photographing wildlife, sporting events, concerns or even distant landscapes, a native 10x zoom camera could play a vital role in boosting flexibility without requiring extra equipment.

However, the game of developing a 10x optical zoom is not as simple as it seems. Longer focal length generally requires larger camera modules with increased internal space and an advanced image stabilisation system to maintain sharpness.

The manufacturer has to balance multiple competing priorities, including device thickness, battery capacity, weight, heat management, and production costs. Vivo Ultra-series has a history of embracing larger camera bumps and thicker designs that accommodate advanced imaging hardware. It makes the company well-positioned to experiment with more advanced zoom technologies.
