Popularly known as the "Nightingale of India," Lata Mangeshkar gave Indian music a treasure of none other with a soft yet powerful voice. Her more-than-70-year-ling singing career saw her record thousands of songs that still survive in people's hearts.
Lata Mangeshkar was considered one of the greatest playback singers in Indian cinema, creating magic with her soulful solo songs and unforgettable duets. Her collaborations with legends such as Mohammed Rafi, Kishore Kumar, and Mukesh, along with many other noted singers, remain among the most cherished songs in Hindi cinema. Her melodies continue to be timeless even after she is gone.

Lata Mangeshkar was born into a family where the performing arts were a big part of their life. Her father was the owner of a theatre group, and music was a big part of her life since her childhood. Growing up in such a life environment was naturally a big contributor to her desire to become a good singer. Lata Mangeshkar, along with her sister Asha Bhosle, chose a life of music to carry on their father’s legacy. In an old interview to Stardust magazine, Lata Mangeshkar shared the reason why she chose to become a singer.
The Mangeshkar family is also an example of artistic brilliance, and all the sisters of Lata, such as Asha, Usha, Meena, and Hridaynath, are leading artists. They have also worked together on various occasions, making the Mangeshkar family an example of artistic excellence.
Despite being a musical icon, Lata Mangeshkar never listened to her own recordings. While speaking to Bollywood Hungama, she once said that if she listened to her songs, she would find “a hundred faults” in her singing, showing her lifelong dedication to perfection.
Among her many collaborations, Lata Mangeshkar enjoyed singing with Kishore Kumar the most. She affectionately called him Kishoreda.

In 1974, The Guinness Book of Records listed Lata Mangeshkar as the most recorded artist. The claim was later disputed by Mohammed Rafi. While Guinness continued to mention Lata Mangeshkar, it also noted Rafi’s objection. The entry was removed in 1991, and in 2011, her sister Asha Bhosle was named the most recorded artist. Currently, the record is held by Pulapaka Susheela.
Beyond music, Lata Mangeshkar actively supported social and charitable causes. She extended help to Indian soldiers, especially during the 1962 Sino-Indian war, reflecting her deep sense of patriotism and social responsibility.
Lata Mangeshkar recorded her last song in 2019. Titled ‘Saugandh Mujhe Is Mitti Ki’, the song was composed by Mayuresh Pai as a tribute to the Indian Army and the nation. It was officially released on March 30, 2019, marking the final musical offering of the legendary singer.
