BTS Grammy Boycott: BTS has once again become the centre of global music headlines, but this time it is not because of a chart-topping album or a record-breaking tour. The K-pop supergroup has decided not to submit its music for the 2027 Grammy Awards, triggering a worldwide debate over representation, fairness and the future of international artists at the Recording Academy.

While fans and analysts continue to discuss the decision, another question has emerged: Could BTS’ absence cost the Grammys hundreds of millions of dollars?

Although a widely shared estimate suggests a potential $340 million impact, no official organisation has confirmed the figure. Still, the discussion highlights BTS’ enormous commercial influence and the evolving relationship between global artists and Western award shows.

BTS Grammy Boycott: Why Did BTS Withdraw from the 2027 Grammy Awards?

BTS announced on July 29 that it would not submit its music for Grammy consideration in 2027. The decision came weeks after the Recording Academy introduced the Best Asian Pop Music Performance category, one of five new awards set to debut at the 69th Grammy Awards.

In a joint statement, the group said, “We have decided not to enter the Grammys this year. We hope that our music can be heard and loved for the music itself, rather than being divided by region or language. We thank ARMY and everyone who is always with us.”

Many fans interpreted the statement as opposition to categorising artists based on geography or language rather than allowing them to compete equally in the main Grammy categories.

BTS Grammy Boycott: Where Did the $340 Million Financial Loss Claim Come From?

Following BTS’ announcement, social media posts and entertainment commentary claimed that the Grammys could lose nearly $340 million because of the group’s absence.

However, neither the Recording Academy, Disney/ABC, CBS nor Nielsen has confirmed this figure. Reports indicate that the estimate originated from independent online analysis rather than official financial records. As a result, the number remains speculative and should not be treated as a verified financial projection.

BTS Grammy Boycott: Why Industry Experts Believe BTS Matters Financially

Even though the reported figure remains unverified, BTS has repeatedly demonstrated its ability to attract global audiences.

The group’s Grammy performances and nominations between 2020 and 2022 generated significant television viewership, social media engagement and online discussions. Since completing military service, BTS has returned with its album “Arirang,” which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, while its global tour is expected to generate more than $1 billion in revenue, according to industry estimates.

BTS Grammy Boycott: Grammys Continue to Face TV Ratings Pressure

The debate comes as the Grammy Awards continue to experience declining television audiences.

The 68th Grammy Awards attracted approximately 14.4 million viewers, down from 15.4 million the previous year and 16.9 million in 2024. Despite lower television ratings, the Recording Academy has highlighted strong digital engagement, including hundreds of millions of video views and millions of social media interactions.

Advertising revenue remains closely tied to audience size, making major international artists valuable contributors to the event’s commercial appeal.

BTS Grammy Boycott: Recording Academy Responds to BTS’ Decision

Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. expressed disappointment over BTS’ decision but said he respected the group’s choice.

Mason also emphasised that artists submitting music in the new Asian Pop category would remain eligible for major awards such as Record of the Year and Album of the Year, rejecting suggestions that the category limits broader recognition.

BTS Grammy Boycott: Will BTS’ Decision Change the Grammys?

The long-term impact remains uncertain.

The 2027 Grammy Awards will move from CBS to ABC, with simultaneous streaming on Hulu and Disney+ under a new broadcasting agreement. That transition may reshape how ratings, streaming audiences and advertising performance are measured.

Meanwhile, industry observers continue to watch whether other Asian artists will follow BTS’ lead or continue submitting music under the Recording Academy’s expanded category system.
