EPFO New Rules 2026: For millions of salaried workers, the Employees’ Provident Fund is meant to build a retirement cushion, but financial emergencies often arrive long before retirement. The new EPF Scheme 2026 gives members a simpler framework to access part of that money for medical treatment, education, marriage, housing and other specified needs.
The revised system groups the earlier withdrawal provisions into broader categories and keeps 25% of the total PF balance protected, while allowing members to access the remaining eligible amount subject to the applicable conditions.
The new framework came into effect with the Employees’ Provident Funds Scheme, 2026, replacing the earlier framework and simplifying partial withdrawals. EPFO has also clarified how frequently members can use the advance facility for different purposes.
PF Withdrawal Rules 2026: What Has Changed Under EPF Scheme 2026?
The biggest change is the consolidation of several earlier provisions into three broad categories:
- Essential needs: Illness, education and marriage
- Housing needs: Home purchase, construction, loan repayment and renovation
- Special circumstances: Situations notified by the Central Board of Trustees
The government had announced the simplification in 2025, saying the earlier 13 partial-withdrawal provisions created confusion and led to rejected claims. The revised system also reduced the minimum membership requirement for partial withdrawals to 12 months.
PF Withdrawal Rules 2026: How Much PF Money Can You Withdraw?
Under the revised framework, members generally have to retain 25% of their total PF balance as a minimum balance.
That means the amount available as the eligible member balance is effectively the remaining 75% of the total balance, including the employee contribution, employer contribution and interest, subject to the rules for the particular withdrawal category.
So, if a member has a total EPF balance of ₹4 lakh, the 25% minimum balance would be ₹1 lakh. The eligible amount for withdrawal would therefore be up to ₹3 lakh, subject to the applicable conditions.
The rules are designed to give workers access to their savings without allowing repeated withdrawals to completely erode their retirement corpus.
EPF Withdrawal For Illness: No Fixed Frequency Limit
Medical emergencies remain one of the main reasons for accessing PF savings.
Members can seek an EPF advance for illness or medical treatment involving themselves or eligible family members. Under the revised framework, there is no specified cap on the number of illness-related withdrawals, subject to the applicable eligibility rules.
After completing the required membership period, the eligible member balance can be used for this purpose.
EPF Withdrawal For Education: Up To 10 Times
The new rules provide greater flexibility for education-related expenses.
Members can take an EPF advance for the education of themselves or eligible family members. Such withdrawals can be made up to 10 times during EPF membership.
This represents a significant change from the earlier framework, under which education and marriage withdrawals were subject to a combined limit.
EPF Withdrawal For Marriage: Up To 5 Times
Marriage expenses also come under the essential-needs category.
Members can seek an advance for their own marriage or that of eligible family members. The revised rules allow such withdrawals up to five times during the membership period.
The amount remains subject to the eligible balance and other conditions prescribed under the scheme.
EPF Withdrawal For Housing: Up To 5 Times
The new framework brings several housing-related requirements under one category.
Members can use the EPF advance facility for:
- Buying a flat or house
- Buying a site for construction
- Constructing a house
- Repaying an eligible home loan
- Renovating or improving an existing house
Housing-related withdrawals can be made up to five times during EPF membership, subject to the scheme’s conditions.
Special Circumstances: Up To 2 Withdrawals A Year
The third category covers special circumstances notified by the Central Board of Trustees, EPF.
Under the new framework, members can use this provision up to two times in a financial year.
The revised system also makes this category simpler because members do not have to navigate the earlier long list of separate circumstances in the same way.
PF Withdrawal Rules 2026: What Happens If You Lose Your Job?
Unemployment has a separate provision under the revised EPF framework.
A member can withdraw 75% of the PF balance immediately after becoming unemployed, while the remaining 25% can become available after the member remains unemployed for one year. The government clarified this provision after confusion arose over changes to the final-settlement rules.
The change is important because the new framework distinguishes between taking a partial advance and permanently settling the EPF account.
PF Withdrawal Rules 2026: Is There A 12-Month Service Requirement?
Yes, 12 months of total EPF membership is the standard minimum membership period for the main partial-withdrawal categories.
The government specifically said it had replaced different earlier service requirements, some of which extended to several years, with a uniform 12-month requirement.
However, the 2026 scheme also contains a provision for members who exit employment before completing 12 months, allowing a partial withdrawal from the eligible member balance subject to the conditions specified in the scheme.
PF Withdrawal Rules 2026: How Fast Can EPF Advance Claims Be Settled?
EPFO has also pushed faster digital processing of advance claims.
The auto-settlement limit for eligible advance claims was raised to ₹5 lakh, with such claims targeted for processing within three days. EPFO said the facility covers advances for areas including illness, education, marriage and housing.
The revised withdrawal framework also aims to make the process more automated and reduce documentation for eligible claims.

| Reason | How Often Can You Withdraw? |
|---|---|
| Illness | No fixed limit |
| Education | Up to 10 times during membership |
| Marriage | Up to 5 times during membership |
| Housing | Up to 5 times during membership |
| Special circumstances | Up to 2 times in a financial year |

The actual amount available can vary according to the purpose and eligibility conditions under the EPF Scheme 2026.
PF Withdrawal Rules 2026: Why Has EPFO Kept 25% Of The Balance Protected?
The 25% minimum balance is intended to prevent members from exhausting their retirement savings through repeated advances.
The Labour Ministry said frequent withdrawals had left many members with very small balances at final settlement. The new rule therefore tries to strike a balance between giving workers access to money during important life events and preserving a retirement corpus.
The government has also said the retained amount can continue earning interest and benefit from compounding.
EPFO New Rules 2026: What Members Should Remember
The biggest takeaway is that EPF members now have a simpler withdrawal framework, but the entire PF balance is not generally available for routine partial advances.
After meeting the relevant conditions, members can access the eligible portion of their balance, while 25% remains protected. The frequency then depends on why the money is being withdrawn, illness has no fixed frequency cap, education allows 10 withdrawals, marriage and housing allow five each, and special circumstances allow two per financial year.
