Thousands of Facebook users reported issues accessing their accounts early Sunday after the platform experienced a widespread technical outage. Many were unable to log in, while others received error messages saying their accounts were temporarily unavailable. According to outage-tracking website Downdetector, reports began rising at around 3:25 a.m. ET, with thousands of complaints logged within a short period, mainly from users in the United States.
Many Facebook users were greeted with a message that said: “Your account is currently unavailable due to a site issue. We expect this to be resolved shortly. Please try again in a few minutes.” Some users also reported seeing temporary account restriction messages before being redirected to an error page.
Was Instagram Also Affected?
Some users also reported problems accessing Instagram, which is also owned by Meta. Reports of Instagram issues surfaced around the same time as the Facebook outage.
Were All Devices Affected? Early reports suggest the issue mainly affected the Facebook website.
According to Downdetector:
•   63% of complaints were related to the website.
•   20% involved mobile devices.
•   10% were linked to the Facebook app.
Some users said Facebook continued working on mobile devices while the desktop version remained inaccessible. Several users shared their experiences on social media platforms like Reddit. One user claimed they first received a message saying “You’ve been temporarily banned” before being redirected to a generic error page.
Meta has experienced several major outages in recent years. One of the biggest disruptions occurred in October 2021, when Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger remained unavailable for nearly six hours worldwide due to a network configuration issue. Meta had later confirmed the outage was caused by a faulty configuration change to its network infrastructure.
