Ganesh Chaturthi 2026: For millions of devotees, Ganesh Chaturthi is more than the arrival of an idol. It is the beginning of a period when homes, streets and entire neighbourhoods make space for Lord Ganesha. From decorated pandals and morning prayers to modaks, aartis and massive immersion processions, the festival changes the rhythm of cities for several days.

In 2026, devotees will observe Ganesh Chaturthi on Monday, September 14, with the festival beginning with the installation and worship of Lord Ganesha idols. The main Ganesh Sthapana puja window in Delhi is expected between 11:02 AM and 1:31 PM, while the major immersion day, Anant Chaturdashi, will fall on September 25.

But why does the date sometimes create confusion when the Chaturthi Tithi continues into the following morning? How did a largely household tradition become one of India’s biggest public festivals? And why does the farewell procession carry as much emotional weight as Bappa’s arrival?

Here is everything to know about Ganesh Chaturthi 2026.

Ganesh Chaturthi 2026 Date: When Will The Festival Begin?

Ganesh Chaturthi will be celebrated on September 14, 2026.

The Chaturthi Tithi begins at 7:06 AM on September 14 and continues until 7:44 AM on September 15. Since the Chaturthi prevails on September 14 during the relevant daytime period, devotees will observe Ganesh Chaturthi and perform the main installation and puja on September 14.

The festival culminates with Anant Chaturdashi and the major Ganesh Visarjan on September 25, 2026. However, devotees do not always keep an idol until the final day. Many families choose immersion after one and a half, three, five or seven days depending on their family tradition.

Ganesh Sthapana Muhurat 2026: What is The Puja Time?

The most important ritual on Ganesh Chaturthi is the installation of the idol, known as Ganesh Sthapana.

According to Drik Panchang, the Madhyahna Ganesh Puja Muhurat for New Delhi on September 14 is 11:02 AM to 1:31 PM. Devotees traditionally consider the midday period especially important for Ganesh Chaturthi worship.

The exact muhurat can vary by location, so devotees following a specific local Panchang should check the timings for their city.

Ganesh Chaturthi 2026: Why Do Devotees Celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi?

Ganesh Chaturthi marks the birth of Lord Ganesha, who holds a special place in Hindu worship as the remover of obstacles.

Popular mythology says Goddess Parvati created Ganesha from the paste used during her bathing ritual and instructed him to guard her entrance. When Lord Shiva returned and Ganesha stopped him from entering, the confrontation eventually led to Shiva severing Ganesha’s head.

After Parvati expressed her grief and anger, Shiva restored Ganesha’s life with an elephant’s head. He also granted him the honour of being “Pratham Pujya”, meaning devotees worship him before beginning important religious ceremonies.

This belief explains why devotees seek Ganesha’s blessings before starting new ventures, ceremonies and important work.

Ganesh Chaturthi History: How Did It Become A Public Festival?

The story of modern Ganesh Chaturthi is closely connected with Maharashtra’s social and political history.

Ganesha worship existed in Maharashtra long before the festival became a massive public celebration. During the 18th century, the Peshwa period gave the tradition significant royal patronage. Later, under British rule, public celebrations became less prominent, and many families continued the tradition privately.

The festival changed dramatically in the late 19th century.

Freedom fighter Bal Gangadhar Tilak helped transform Ganesh celebrations into a major public event. He saw Ganesha’s broad appeal as a way of bringing people together during the freedom movement. Historical accounts describe his aim as using the festival to bridge “the gap between Brahmins and non-Brahmins” and create a wider sense of unity.

Ganesha’s popularity also made the deity suitable for a mass movement. Tilak referred to him as “the god for everybody”, helping turn household celebrations into large community gatherings.

The first public Ganesh festival is generally associated with Pune-based reformer Bhausaheb Rangari, while Tilak played a major role in expanding and popularising the public form of the celebration in the 1890s.

Ganesh Chaturthi 2026: How Ganesh Chaturthi is Celebrated Today

Modern Ganesh Chaturthi combines religious rituals with community celebrations.

Devotees bring idols of Lord Ganesha into their homes or community pandals. Priests and families perform the Sthapana ceremony, followed by daily prayers and aartis.

Common offerings include:

  • Modaks
  • Durva grass
  • Red flowers, especially hibiscus
  • Fruits and sweets
  • Coconut and other traditional offerings

Public pandals often organise cultural programmes, devotional performances, food distribution and social initiatives alongside the religious ceremonies.

The festival has also expanded beyond India. Hindu communities in countries including Nepal, Mauritius, Fiji, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, the US, Canada, the UK and Australia observe Ganesh Chaturthi with local celebrations.

Ganesh Chaturthi in Maharashtra: Why Mumbai Celebrations Are Special

Maharashtra remains at the heart of large-scale Ganeshotsav celebrations.

Mumbai’s neighbourhoods become packed with public pandals during the festival, with Lalbaugcha Raja among the most famous. The 2026 edition of the Lalbaugcha Raja festival is scheduled from September 14 to September 25, coinciding with the major immersion day.

Millions of devotees traditionally visit the iconic idol, making it one of the biggest attractions of Mumbai’s Ganeshotsav. The first look of the 2026 Lalbaugcha Raja idol has already generated excitement ahead of the festival.

The celebrations have also increasingly focused on sustainability. This year, for example, the Lalbaugcha Raja mandal and BMC have launched a project to convert organic waste from prasad into renewable energy for Mumbai hospitals.

Ganesh Visarjan 2026: When Will Bappa Leave?

After days of prayers and celebrations, devotees eventually prepare for the most emotional part of Ganesh Chaturthi, the visarjan.

The major immersion day in 2026 will be Anant Chaturdashi on September 25.

Devotees carry the idol through streets in colourful processions accompanied by drums, dancing and devotional songs. The familiar chant “Ganpati Bappa Morya, Pudhchya Varshi Lavkar Ya” expresses the central emotion of the farewell — asking Bappa to return soon next year.

The idol is eventually immersed in water, symbolising Ganesha’s return while devotees accept the temporary nature of his earthly presence.

Ganesh Chaturthi 2026: Why Ganesh Visarjan is An Emotional Farewell

For devotees who spend several days praying to Ganesha, the immersion does not simply mark the end of a festival.

Families often develop a strong emotional connection with the idol during the period of worship. Children participate in the daily rituals, neighbours meet at pandals, and communities spend days celebrating together.

That is why the final procession combines celebration and sadness. Drums continue to play, people dance, and chants fill the streets, but the farewell also carries the promise of welcoming Ganesha back the following year.

Ganesh Chaturthi therefore brings together faith, family, community and culture in a festival that has evolved dramatically over centuries while retaining its central message of seeking Ganesha’s blessings before a new beginning.
