Krishna Janmashtami 2026: Hindus all over India are gearing up to observe the birth of Lord Krishna, which is among the most significant Hindu festivals. This year, the prime celebration of Janmashtami will take place on Friday, September 4, 2026. Nevertheless, the night celebration will spill into September 5, thereby leading to confusion as to whether the festival takes place on September 4 or 5. Such a confusion could be as a result of the difference between traditional calendars and the dates of observance by different Vaishnava sampradaya. To illustrate, according to Drik Panchang, the common date of celebrating Janmashtami is September 4 in New Delhi, although ISKCON will be celebrating the festival of Lord Krishna on September 5.
Krishna Janmashtami 2026 Date: Is It On September 4 Or 5?
As per the widely observed Smarta tradition, Krishna Janmashtami will be celebrated on Friday, September 4, 2026. This particular Hindu festival is held as per the Krishna Paksha Ashtami Tithi and the midnight birth practice related to Lord Krishna.
The Nishita Puja, denoting the symbolic birth of Lord Krishna, commences from late on September 4 and continues through midnight until September 5. On the basis of the timings provided for New Delhi, Nishita Puja Muhurat occurs at 11:57 PM on September 4 and 12:43 AM on September 5.
Hence, September 4 will be the primary day to celebrate Janmashtami and September 5 will be the secondary day of celebrating the midnight prayers in the morning. The Dahi Handi celebrations too will be mostly associated with September 5 this time.
Janmashtami 2026: Ashtami Tithi And Rohini Nakshatra
Janmashtami day falls on a certain date according to the Hindu Calendar, which includes Ashtami Tithi at midnight. As per the current year, Ashtami Tithi comes in the night between September 4 and 5. Another distinct feature about Janmashtami is Rohini Nakshatra, which is connected with the birth of Lord Krishna in Hindu culture. It has been mentioned that this particular year, the celebration of Janmashtami becomes even more important owing to both the features, namely Ashtami Tithi and Rohini Nakshatra. According to Astroyogi, the day of Rohini Nakshatra comes on September 4, whereas Ashtami Tithi continues until September 5.
Janmashtami 2026: Six Auspicious Yogas And Combinations
Several astrology reports have highlighted six auspicious combinations associated with September 4. These are commonly listed as:
- Hans Yoga
- Malavya Raj Yoga
- Budhaditya Raj Yoga

- Sarvartha Siddhi Yoga
- Rohini Nakshatra
Astrology sources describe these combinations as favourable for religious observances, prayers and spiritual activities. It is worth noting that Rohini Nakshatra is not technically a yoga. It is a lunar constellation (nakshatra). Therefore, for factual accuracy, these are better described as six auspicious yogas and astrological combinations, rather than six yogas alone.
