What Is The Significance Of Hariyali Amavasya?
Hariyali Amavasya gets its name from the lush greenery seen during the monsoon season. The day is traditionally associated with prosperity, renewal and harmony with nature. The occasion is also considered significant for Pitru Karma, or rituals performed in remembrance of ancestors. Devotees offer prayers and water to their ancestors and seek peace and blessings for their families. Since the Amavasya falls during Sawan, worshipping Lord Shiva is also considered auspicious. Devotees perform Jalabhishek on the Shivling and offer Bel Patra as part of their prayers.
Planting and caring for trees is another important tradition associated with Hariyali Amavasya, linking religious observance with respect for nature.
What Is The Hariyali Amavasya Vrat Katha?
According to a traditional legend, a king’s innocent daughter-in-law was falsely blamed after sweets went missing. A mouse was responsible but later took revenge by secretly carrying her clothes to a guest’s room, causing the king to believe she had committed a wrongdoing. The king banished the innocent queen from the palace. She began living in a hut near the forest, where she devoted herself to prayer, lighting lamps and distributing jaggery and puffed rice as prasad.
Later, the king stopped near her hut while hunting and discovered the truth. Realising his mistake, he apologised and brought the queen back to the palace. The story highlights the importance of truth, faith and avoiding judgments without knowing the facts.
What Are The Hariyali Amavasya Puja Rituals?
Devotees traditionally observe several rituals on Hariyali Amavasya:
•   Take an early bath and wear clean clothes.
•   Take a Sankalp for ancestral prayers.
•   Perform Pitru Tarpan using water, black sesame, barley and akshat while remembering ancestors.
•   Perform Jalabhishek on the Shivling and offer Bel Patra.
•   Donate food and other essentials to people in need.
•   Plant and water a tree while dedicating the act to one’s ancestors.
•   Light a diya in the evening, traditionally near a Peepal tree.
Hariyali Amavasya is therefore observed through a combination of ancestral remembrance, Shiva worship, charity and activities connected with nature.
