Hartalika Teej 2026: Hartalika Teej Vrat Katha (The Holy Story)
The word Hartalika is derived from two words: Harat (meaning “abduction”) and Aalika (meaning “female friend”).
According to the Hindu scriptures, Goddess Parvati was deeply in love with Lord Shiva and wanted to marry him. However, her father, King Himalaya, had accepted a marriage proposal from Lord Vishnu on her behalf. Distressed by this decision, Parvati confided in her close friend.
To protect Parvati’s vows, her friend “abducted” her and took her deep into a dense, hidden forest. In the forest, Parvati built a Shiva Lingam out of sand and clay. She undertook severe penance (Tapasya), surviving without food or water (Nirjala) for years.
Impressed by her unyielding devotion, faith, and patience, Lord Shiva appeared before her on the day of Bhadrapada Shukla Tritiya. He granted her wish and accepted her as his divine consort. Since then, women observe this fast to celebrate the power of determination and true love.
