Mother’s Day 2026: Significance
Traditionally celebrated on the second Sunday of May every year, Mother’s Day is an occasion that’s meant to honour and appreciate mothers. The day was established in 1908 by American social activist, Anna Jarvis, who wished to honour her mother.
Jarvis had been campaigning to make the day an active holiday in the US, since 1905, when her mother passed away. By 1911, almost all the American states started celebrating the holiday. And in 1914, then US President Woodrow Wilson declared it a national holiday. White carnations are the traditional flower of Mother’s Day.
Mother’s Day 2026: How Different Countries Celebrate Mother’s Day
Today, Mother’s Day is celebrated in more than 40 countries worldwide. However, the traditions for this day vary widely, with different countries celebrating it in their own unique ways. In Thailand, Mother’s Day is celebrated on the birthday of Queen Sirikit, widely considered to be their Queen Mother.
French people call it ‘La Fête Des Mères’ and often gift wine to their mothers. In Mexico, mothers are serenaded with a special mariachi band that plays the song “Las Mañanitas”. Peruvians visit cemeteries, while Italian and Ethiopian celebrations are centred around food. While in Haiti, people wear flowers for their mothers (red if she’s alive or white if she’s passed away). Chinese celebrations are surprisingly similar to the ones in the US, and people there generally celebrate by gifting red carnations to their mothers.
