Delhi has been named the world’s most affordable city for students in the latest QS Best Student Cities Rankings 2027, while Mumbai has emerged as India’s highest ranked student destination. The rankings assess cities worldwide based on university quality, affordability, employability and overall student experience.
Why Has Delhi Been Ranked The World’s Most Affordable Student City?
Delhi topped the global affordability rankings thanks to its comparatively low education costs. According to the report, the average annual tuition fee for international students in the city is around US$2,700, making higher education more accessible. The city also performed well in employment opportunities, ranking 29th globally in the Employer Activity category.
Why Is Mumbai India’s Highest-Ranked Student City?
Mumbai secured the 91st position globally, making it the highest-ranked Indian city in the overall QS Best Student Cities 2027 rankings. The city ranked 34th worldwide for Employer Activity, reflecting strong job opportunities for graduates. It also secured 12th place globally in affordability, offering relatively affordable education despite being one of India’s biggest metropolitan cities.
Which Other Indian Cities Featured In The Rankings?
Apart from Delhi and Mumbai, Bengaluru and Chennai also made it to the global rankings. Bengaluru was placed at joint 114th, while Chennai secured the 123rd position. The report noted that Bengaluru recorded the highest average international tuition fees among the four Indian cities at around US$5,400 per year.
How Does QS Rank The Best Student Cities?
The QS Best Student Cities Rankings evaluate destinations using six major parameters:
•   University quality
•   Employer activity
•   Affordability
•   Desirability
•   Student mix
•   Student views
These categories are measured through 23 separate indicators, using data collected through QS surveys and independent research.
To qualify, a city must have a population of more than 250,000 and host at least two universities featured in the QS World University Rankings.
Which Cities Topped The Global Rankings?
South Korea’s Seoul was named the world’s best student city in the QS Best Student Cities 2027 rankings.
The global top ten are:
•   Seoul
•   Tokyo
•   London
•   Melbourne
•   Munich (joint fifth)
•   Sydney (joint fifth)
•   Paris
•   Berlin
•   Vienna
•   Zurich
Among other Asian cities, Singapore ranked 11th, Beijing secured 12th place, and Kuala Lumpur was ranked 15th.
