Netflix’s animated Stranger Things spin-off, Tales From ’85, is set to return for its second season on 17 September, just five months after its debut episodes turned the show into an unexpected hit and prompted one of the fastest renewals in the franchise’s history.

The series, developed by Eric Robles alongside Stranger Things creators the Duffer Brothers, is set in Hawkins during the winter of 1985, slotting into the timeline between the second and third seasons of the flagship live-action show. According to Collider, Netflix confirmed the new season’s release date and episode count as part of a wider slate of September announcements, alongside a new trailer offering the first extended look at what the Hawkins gang will face next.

Stranger Things: When Does Tales From ’85 Season 2 Premiere?

Season 2 arrives on Netflix on 17 September 2026, according to the streamer, less than five months after the first season debuted on 23 April, with its opening two episodes having also received a limited early theatrical release on 18 April. Collider reported that the new run will consist of eight 30-minute episodes, continuing the show’s format of shorter, animated instalments rather than the longer runtimes seen in the main series. The unusually quick turnaround between seasons, MovieWeb noted, suggests production on the follow-up was already well under way before Netflix formally renewed the series just five days after its debut.

Stranger Things: What Happened At The End Of Season 1?

The first season followed the Hawkins Independent Committee, or HIC, a young team including Eleven, Mike, Will, Dustin, Lucas and Max, as they investigated a mutated creature known as the Horde Queen, working alongside a misguided character named Daniel Fischer before ultimately trapping the Queen in a gate to the Upside Down. The season’s final moments complicated that victory, however, with a glowing blue stem bursting from the Horde Queen’s corpse to reveal the unmistakable maw of a Demogorgon underneath. Showrunner Eric Robles described that closing image as intentionally setting up what comes next, telling What’s on Netflix it represented “the beginning of what will become a new mystery and chapter in the Stranger Things: Tales From ’85 saga.”

Stranger Things: What Will The New Season Be About?

According to Netflix’s official synopsis, Season 2 finds the gang facing a fresh threat as Valentine’s Day approaches, with mysterious “ghostly” apparitions and a swarm of what the streamer describes as “hate sprites” wreaking havoc around Hawkins.

The Stranger Things Wiki reports the new mystery centres on an entity connected to the town’s long-abandoned silver mines, an unexplored corner of Hawkins that showrunner Robles has said the series is finally ready to dig into.

“What’s really exciting is we’re going to go places that we haven’t been to before,” Robles told Netflix’s Tudum. “There’s a mine in Hawkins that we haven’t explored yet.” The series has also introduced a new type of monster born from the fallout of Season 1’s finale, described as “Hawkins Lab science meets Upside Down matter,” which releases luminous green spores capable of infecting organic material around town when the creatures die, setting up the prospect of even stranger hybrid threats this time around.

Stranger Things: Who Is Returning And Who Is New For Season 2?

The show’s young voice cast is returning in full, with Brooklyn Davey Norstedt again voicing Eleven, alongside Jolie Hoang-Rappaport as Max, Luca Diaz as Mike, Elisha “EJ” Williams as Lucas, Braxton Quinney as Dustin, Ben Plessala as Will and Brett Gipson as Hopper.

According to the Stranger Things Wiki, Season 2 also marks the first time newcomer Nikki Baxter joins the main cast on a full-time basis, having been introduced in the first season, giving the young ensemble a new addition to work alongside as they take on the show’s next mystery.

Stranger Things: How Has The Spin-Off Performed So Far?

Tales From ’85 arrived to a warm, if not universally glowing, critical reception, holding a 63% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 35 reviews, with critics broadly crediting the series’ nostalgic setting and distinctive Saturday-morning-cartoon animation style for successfully extending the Stranger Things universe to a younger audience, even as some reviews were more measured about its overall impact.

Commercially, the show’s rapid renewal points to a stronger reception among Netflix’s own viewership data, with the series reportedly dominating the streamer’s charts within hours of its April debut, a performance strong enough to secure a second season order just five days later.
