Teachers’ Day 2026 Wishes: Why is Teachers’ Day Celebrated on September 5?
The answer goes back to Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, who was born on September 5, 1888. He became one of India’s most respected philosophers and academics before entering public life. He served as India’s first Vice President from 1952 to 1962 and became the country’s second President in 1962.
When Radhakrishnan became President, some of his students and admirers wanted to celebrate his birthday. Instead of holding a personal birthday celebration, he suggested that September 5 should be observed as a day dedicated to teachers.
That idea led to the beginning of India’s Teachers’ Day tradition in 1962.
Radhakrishnan’s own career also explains why his birthday became associated with teachers. He worked as an academic and professor and held senior positions at several universities, including Andhra University and Banaras Hindu University. He later chaired the University Education Commission formed in 1948 to examine higher education in independent India.
Who Was Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan?
Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was a philosopher, scholar, teacher and statesman.
He taught philosophy at several institutions and became internationally known for his work on Indian philosophy and comparative religion. His academic career eventually led him into public service.
Radhakrishnan served as India’s first Vice President from 1952 to 1962 and then as the second President from 1962 to 1967. He also received the Bharat Ratna in 1954, India’s highest civilian honour.
His association with education remains one of the key reasons students and teachers remember him on September 5.
Teachers’ Day 2026: How Students Can Celebrate
Teachers’ Day does not require an elaborate celebration.
Students can write a handwritten note, send a thoughtful WhatsApp message, post a picture with their teacher or simply say thank you in person. Schools may also organise cultural programmes, performances, speeches and other activities to mark the occasion.
The most meaningful message is often the simplest one.
Tell your teacher what you remember.
Tell them which lesson stayed with you.
Tell them how their encouragement helped.
And, most importantly, tell them thank you.
Because a teacher’s work may happen inside a classroom, but its impact can continue long after the classroom is left behind.
