About Vat Savitri Vrat 2026: Brief Overview 

Vat Savitri Vrat, also known as Savitri Amavasya, is a festival for married Hindu women. It’s meant to commemorate Princess Savitri, who rescued her husband, Satyavan, from the clutches of Yamraj, the Hindu god of death. 

It traditionally involves the worship of the ‘bargad’ (banyan) tree by circumambulating it and tying a sacred red thread around it. The festival is celebrated in the North Indian states of Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana and also in Nepal. 

When is Vat Savitri Vrat 2026: Puja Date & Time 

This year, Vat Savitri Vrat will fall on 16th May, 2026. The puja timings are mentioned below: 

  • Start of Amavasya Tithi: 5:11 AM IST from 16th May, 2026 
  • End of Amavasya Tithi: 1:30 PM IST on 17th May, 2026.

Dos on Vat Savitri Vrat 

On Vat Savitri Vrat, married women must: 

  • Tie the thread (Kachcha Soot or Kalava) around the Banyan tree in a secure manner. 

  • Wear bright, auspicious colours like red, orange and pink

  • Listen to the full Vrat Katha of Savitri and Satyavan from start to finish, without any interruptions.

  • Offer fruits, flowers & water to the banyan tree.

  • Maintain a harmonious atmosphere. Avoid conflict.

Don’ts on Vat Savitri Vrat 

On Vat Savitri Vrat, married women must avoid the following: 

  • Wear blue, black or white colours, as they are considered inauspicious. 

  • Get up from the middle of the Vrat Katha. 

  • Cut any hair or nails. 

  • Sleep in the afternoon

  • Have any sort of marital discord or dispute with your husband
