India Weather Update Today: India is witnessing two completely different weather systems at the same time while large parts of North, Central and Western India continue to struggle under a severe heatwave, southern and northeastern states are preparing for heavy rain as the Southwest Monsoon steadily advances. Temperatures have crossed 47°C in some regions, while several coastal and hill states are already reporting thunderstorms and intense rainfall activity.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), severe heatwave conditions are expected to continue across Northwest and Central India through the coming week and at the same time, monsoon activity over the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal is strengthening rapidly, bringing moisture-laden winds into southern India.

Will it Rain or Snow in the Hills?

Higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand may witness light rain and isolated snowfall in elevated mountain areas over the next 48 hours. Srinagar remains unusually cool compared to northern plains.

Srinagar Weather: Minimum: 9°C & Maximum: 17°C

Tourist destinations in Gulmarg and Sonamarg could experience brief snowfall during late-night hours due to western disturbances interacting with cold mountain winds.

Why Is The Heat Building Up So Fast Across India?

Meteorologists say multiple atmospheric factors are fueling the heat surge:

  • Dry northwesterly winds are dominating northern India.
  • Rain-bearing systems remain absent over the plains.
  • Delayed pre-monsoon showers have intensified land heating.
  • Urban heat island effects are worsening temperatures in metro cities.
  • Climate data shows India recorded its warmest February-April period in recent years.

Brahmapuri in Maharashtra touched 47.2°C, making it among the hottest places in the country this week.

Where are the Heat Wave Alerts?

  • Red Alert: Delhi, Rajasthan, Haryana, Vidarbha, Uttar Pradesh
  • Orange Alert: Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat
  • Yellow Alert: Bihar, Jharkhand, Chandigarh

Health authorities warn that prolonged exposure may increase risks of dehydration, heat exhaustion and heatstroke, especially among children and elderly citizens.

Is Monsoon Arrived?

Yes, the Southwest Monsoon has advanced into:

  • South Arabian Sea
  • Andaman Sea
  • Parts of Bay of Bengal
  • Kerala coast region

The IMD expects further advancement into Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and northeastern states within the next 3 to 4 days.
