When it comes to animal pregnancies, most people expect the gestation period to last a few weeks or several months. But some animals carry their young for surprisingly long periods. So, which animal gives birth after 12 months? The answer may surprise you.

Which Animal Gives Birth After 12 Months?

The horse is the surprising answer to this animal pregnancy question.

Technically, horses do not usually have a pregnancy lasting a full 12 months. The average gestation period for a mare is approximately 340 days, which is around 11 months. However, normal pregnancies can extend considerably beyond the average, with some mares carrying their foals for longer than 11 months.

This makes the horse one of the animals commonly associated with a pregnancy that can approach a year.

How Long Is a Horse Pregnant?

A female horse, known as a mare, is pregnant for approximately 340 days on average.

Veterinary sources note that normal equine pregnancies can vary substantially. Colorado State University’s Equine Reproduction Laboratory gives a typical range of roughly 320 to 360 days, while other veterinary sources report broader ranges depending on the individual horse.

That means two mares bred around the same time may not necessarily give birth on exactly the same day.

Why Does Horse Pregnancy Last So Long?

One major reason is the development required before a foal is ready to survive outside the womb.

A foal is relatively well developed at birth compared with newborns of many other mammals. Healthy newborn foals can stand and begin moving shortly after birth, making the final stages of pregnancy particularly important for physical development.

During the later part of pregnancy, the foal experiences rapid growth. Nutritional requirements also become especially important during the final months of gestation.

What Is a Baby Horse Called?

A baby horse is called a foal.

When a mare gives birth, the newborn foal is generally capable of standing and moving relatively quickly. This is important in the wild because being able to follow the herd soon after birth can be crucial for survival.

The mare and foal also have an important early bonding period, during which the newborn learns to nurse and adjust to its surroundings.

Does Every Horse Pregnancy Last 340 Days?

No. The 340-day figure is an average, not an exact due date.

Research and veterinary guidance show that gestation length can vary because of several factors, including the individual mare, breed, season and characteristics of the pregnancy. UC Davis researchers have reported horse gestation periods ranging from roughly 310 to 374 days, with an average of about 340 days.

This is why horse owners generally work with an expected foaling window rather than relying on one precise date.
