Prunes, commonly known as dried plums, are among the world’s most popular dried fruits and are widely used as a snack, baking ingredient, and in various recipes. But have you ever wondered which country produces the most prunes in the world?
According to the latest available industry estimates, Chile is currently the world’s leading prune-producing country, with estimated production of around 74,000 metric tonnes in the 2025/26 season. The United States follows with an estimated 64,000 metric tonnes.
Which Country Produces the Most Prunes?
Chile ranks first in global prune production based on the latest 2025/26 estimates. The country is expected to produce approximately 74,000 metric tonnes of prunes, slightly ahead of the United States at 64,000 metric tonnes.
Chile has also strengthened its position as a major player in the international prune industry. Chile Prunes says the country ranks as the world’s leading producer and exporter of prunes, with production nearing 100,000 tonnes when broader industry figures are considered.
Top Prune-Producing Countries
The latest International Nut & Dried Fruit Council estimates put several countries at the top of the global prune-production list:
| Rank | Country | 2025/26 Estimated Production |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Chile | 74,000 MT |
| 2 | United States | 64,000 MT |
| 3 | France | 27,000 MT |
| 4 | Argentina | 25,000 MT |
| 5 | Serbia | 5,000 MT |
| 6 | Australia | 3,000 MT |
| 7 | Italy | 2,000 MT |
| 8 | South Africa | 250 MT |
Together, these countries account for virtually all of the production covered in the latest industry estimate, which puts global prune production at about 200,250 metric tonnes for 2025/26.
Chile vs United States: A Close Race
Chile and the United States have traditionally dominated the global prune industry. Earlier INC data for 2023/24 showed the United States leading with 82,000 metric tonnes, while Chile produced 68,000 metric tonnes.
However, the latest estimates show Chile moving ahead. For 2025/26, Chile’s projected output is 74,000 metric tonnes, compared with 64,000 metric tonnes for the US.
The shift highlights how production can change from season to season because of weather, harvest conditions, orchard yields, and market factors.
Why Is Chile a Major Prune Producer?
Chile has become an important centre for prune cultivation and processing because of its favourable agricultural conditions and established dried-fruit industry. The country’s prune sector includes cultivation, harvesting, drying, processing, and exports.
Chile is also a major exporter. World Bank trade data show that Chile was the largest exporter of dried prunes in 2024, shipping about 84.68 million kilograms worth approximately $255.4 million. The United States ranked second by export quantity among the listed countries.
