N Chandrasekaran, chairman of Tata Sons, announced on Wednesday, August 12, that he will not seek another term at the helm of the Tata Group’s holding company. He will, however, continue as chairman until his current tenure ends in February 2027.

N Chandrasekaran was born in 1963 into a farming family in Mohanur village in Namakkal district, Tamil Nadu. He studied at a Tamil-medium government school in his village, with accounts of his early life noting that he and his brothers walked more than 3 km to attend school. After completing his schooling, Chandrasekaran pursued a Bachelor’s degree in Applied Sciences from Coimbatore Institute of Technology.
He later joined the Master of Computer Applications (MCA) programme at Regional Engineering College, Tiruchirappalli, now known as the National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli (NIT Trichy). He completed his MCA in 1986.
Chandrasekaran had initially considered studying agriculture but was encouraged to explore computer applications by M Gurusamy, then principal of Coimbatore Institute of Technology. He subsequently joined the first MCA batch at Regional Engineering College, Tiruchirappalli.

He became TCS’s Chief Operating Officer before being appointed CEO in October 2009.
