NEW DELHI: The Delhi government has set a deadline of December 2025 to complete the long-pending Barapullah Phase-3 flyover project. Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh visited the construction site on Monday and stated that the work is progressing swiftly, with the remaining tasks expected to be finished within the set timeline.
This was the Minister’s second visit to the site within two months of taking office, highlighting the current administration’s strong commitment to the project. During his earlier visit, the Minister had assessed the situation, following which substantial efforts were made to speed up construction.
“Our goal is to make this flyover operational by December 2025,” said Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh. “It is a vital infrastructure development for Delhi that has faced prolonged delays due to years of inaction. Since assuming office, we’ve prioritized this project and ensured progress on multiple fronts.”
The Barapullah Phase-3 flyover is designed to link Mayur Vihar Phase-I in East Delhi with AIIMS in South Delhi. It will connect with the existing Barapullah corridor near Sarai Kale Khan, significantly enhancing east-west connectivity and reducing travel time for commuters. The project is expected to ease traffic congestion and benefit thousands of daily travelers.
According to officials, approximately 89% of the construction has been completed. However, work has stalled due to pending approvals from the forest department for relocating about 250 trees.
Minister Singh pointed out that delays were primarily due to the inaction of the previous government. “The former administration failed to release payments to contractors and did not initiate the tree relocation process, resulting in years of delay and increased costs. We are actively working to resolve these issues,” he explained.
He also noted that under the leadership of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, the government is coordinating closely with the forest department to secure the necessary approvals. “We are optimistic that we’ll soon receive clearance for tree relocation, which will allow the final phase of work to move forward,” the Minister added.
The project was sanctioned in 2014 and construction began in 2015, with an initial completion target of 2017. However, lack of coordination, bureaucratic inefficiencies, and delays in approvals led to repeated setbacks.
PWD officials confirmed that with renewed government focus, technical issues have been addressed and coordination between departments has significantly improved. Regular inspections are now being held to keep the project on schedule. The current administration has provided the required administrative support and resources to ensure its timely completion.
Minister Singh reaffirmed the government’s resolve, stating, “This project is not just an infrastructure upgrade but a major step forward for Delhi’s development. We are committed to eliminating red tape and ensuring that no important project is left incomplete due to negligence or delays.”
Upon completion, the Barapullah Phase-3 flyover will enhance connectivity between East and South Delhi, contributing to a cleaner, faster, and more efficient transportation network across the capital.
