In a noteworthy move towards preserving and modernising the legislative heritage of Delhi, Speaker of the Delhi Legislative Assembly, Vijender Gupta, held a meeting today with the Hon’ble Lok Sabha Speaker, Om Birla, at the Parliament Secretariat. The discussions centred around strategies to fortify the institutional framework of the Delhi Legislative Assembly, enhance its physical infrastructure, and advance digitalisation and transparency in its operations.

During the deliberation, Gupta briefed Speaker Birla on the various initiatives currently underway at the Delhi Vidhan Sabha, particularly those focused on elevating the historic Assembly complex to the status of a national heritage site. These efforts are designed to honour Delhi’s rich democratic traditions while ensuring the Assembly’s continued relevance and accessibility to future generations.

The Hon’ble Lok Sabha Speaker responded positively by directing the prompt commencement of a project to transform the Delhi Vidhan Sabha library into a fully digital e-library. This conversion is expected to greatly improve public access to legislative documents while safeguarding institutional knowledge for the long term. Demonstrating his strong commitment, Om Birla also instructed his Secretariat to provide comprehensive support to the Delhi Legislative Assembly in its digital and heritage conservation initiatives.

Additionally, Speaker Gupta brought attention to the complete archival records and historical proceedings of the Delhi Assembly Secretariat, which have been meticulously preserved at the iconic Town Hall of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi. Acknowledging the critical significance of this archival repository, Birla issued additional directives to incorporate these documents into the broader digitisation project, thereby reinforcing the importance of safeguarding India’s legislative legacy.

This high-level interaction represents a key collaborative step between India’s central and state legislative institutions, combining the objectives of historical preservation with the vision of digital advancement.
