After years of “aircraft drama” and pandemic-induced setbacks, Qantas has finally locked in a firm launch date for the long-awaited Project Sunrise: nonstop flights between Sydney and London. Starting in October 2027, the airline will officially conquer the “final frontier” of long-haul aviation, slashing travel time by up to four hours and eliminating the traditional stopovers on the iconic “Kangaroo Route.”
Engineering a Modern Flight Miracle
The service will be powered by a fleet of 12 specially modified Airbus A350-1000ULR (Ultra Long Range) jets, currently undergoing rigorous testing. These aircraft are engineering marvels, fitted with an additional 20,000-litre fuel tank that pushes their range to over 16,000 kilometres, allowing them to stay airborne for up to 22 hours.
To ensure the experience remains comfortable despite the record-breaking duration, Qantas has configured the jets with just 238 seats, the lowest density of any A350 globally, prioritising passenger well-being across four distinct cabin classes.
“We made a commitment in 2017 that Qantas would conquer the final frontier of long-haul aviation and connect Australia’s east coast directly to London,” said Qantas CEO Vanessa Hudson.
“From October 2027, that promise becomes reality.” The cabin design, developed alongside the University of Sydney’s Charles Perkins Centre, includes revolutionary features such as circadian-rhythm-synced lighting, specialised memory foam mattresses in the six enclosed First suites, and even an inflight “Wellbeing Zone” where passengers can stretch and hydrate.
The Gamble for the ‘Kangaroo Route’
The Project Sunrise initiative is a high-stakes gamble for the airline, requiring billions in investment and a complete rethink of the passenger experience. While the flights are expected to carry a roughly 20% price premium over one-stop alternatives, Qantas is betting that travellers will pay for the luxury of time. Research commissioned by the airline shows significant demand, with 70% of Australians surveyed expressing intent to book a nonstop long-haul flight.
The launch, now targeted for October 2027, marks the end of a long road for the project, which was originally conceived in 2017 and delayed multiple times by global supply chain issues and aircraft certification hurdles. Following the Sydney-London debut, Qantas plans to roll out similar nonstop service to New York. For now, the airline is focused on finalising the two-month certification campaign for its new flagship fleet, with ticket sales scheduled to open in February 2027.
