A52 Traffic Update: A major section of the A52 in Nottinghamshire remains shut following a serious early morning collision involving a van and a car, causing widespread disruption across the county’s road network. Emergency crews rushed to the scene shortly after 5.20 am on Friday, May 15, with authorities warning drivers that the closure could remain in place for a “considerable amount of time.”

The crash has triggered severe congestion on surrounding routes, disrupted public transport services, and forced traffic onto already busy rural roads while national Highways, Nottinghamshire Police and Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue continue to coordinate a large-scale recovery operation.

A52 Traffic Update: What Happened?

The collision occurred on the A52 between the A6011 at Gamston and the A46 near Saxondale. According to emergency services, the incident involved a van and a passenger vehicle, though officials have not yet confirmed the number of casualties or the extent of injuries.

Traffic monitoring systems showed delays building rapidly before sunrise, with queues stretching along key commuter routes around Gamston, Tollerton, Cotgrave, and Bingham while data from the Department for Transport shows the A52 is one of Nottinghamshire’s busiest commuter corridors, carrying tens of thousands of vehicles daily, especially during weekday rush hours.

A52 Traffic Update: How the Crash Happened?

Investigators have not officially confirmed the cause of the collision however, emergency responders described the scene as serious enough to require a full multi-agency response. Road traffic incidents involving vans account for a significant proportion of serious crashes on UK A-roads each year. Government figures show more than 24,000 people were seriously injured in reported road collisions across Britain last year, with high-speed dual carriageways remaining among the most dangerous routes during peak travel times while police collision investigators are expected to examine vehicle damage, road conditions, CCTV footage and witness statements before determining the circumstances leading up to the crash.

A52 Nottingham City Closed After Serious Crash

The closure has severely affected travel between Nottingham and eastern parts of the county while drivers heading toward Nottingham city centre faced lengthy delays throughout the morning as traffic diverted onto local roads. Congestion intensified around Lady Bay Bridge, Gamston Lings Bar Road and surrounding residential areas as commuters attempted to bypass the closure.

Emergency services urged motorists to avoid the area entirely where possible where a spokesperson for Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “Please plan your routes accordingly this morning and, importantly, the public are asked to avoid the area whilst the emergency services do their work.”

Westbound traffic toward Nottingham has experienced some of the heaviest delays, with queues reported on the A6097, A606 Melton Road and Tollerton Lane and National Highways introduced diversion routes shortly after the closure was implemented. Recovery crews also remain on standby as investigations continue at the scene while motorists reported average delays of up to 10 to 20 minutes during peak periods, although traffic conditions continued worsening as more vehicles were redirected.

A52 Traffic Update: Large Fuel Spill Slows Recovery Operation

Recovery efforts have reportedly been complicated by a significant fuel spill near the collision site while specialist cleanup teams may be required to safely remove hazardous materials before the road can fully reopen. Fuel spills present major risks on high-speed roads because they reduce tyre grip and increase the likelihood of secondary collisions. Cleanup operations often involve absorbent materials, road surface inspections and environmental safety checks while officials warned this added complication could significantly extend closure times.

A52 Traffic Update: Diversions Routes

National Highways introduced detailed diversion routes for both eastbound and westbound traffic. Eastbound drivers are being redirected via the A6011, Meadow Lane, A612, Lowdham and the A6097 before reconnecting with the A46 at Saxondale.

Westbound traffic is being diverted from the A46 Saxondale roundabout through Lowdham, the A612 and Lady Bay Bridge before rejoining the A52 while public transport services have also been heavily affected.

A52 Traffic Update: Which Roads Are Closed?

The A52 remains closed in both directions between Gamston and Saxondale while heavy congestion has also spread to nearby roads including:

  • Cotgrave Lane
  • Tollerton Lane
  • A606 Melton Road
  • A6097
  • A52 Gamston Lings Bar Road

Bus operators Nottingham City Transport and Trentbarton confirmed major service disruptions throughout the morning.

A52 Traffic Update: When Will Traffic Reopen?

Authorities have not provided a reopening time and emergency services warned the closure is expected to remain in place for several hours while investigators complete examinations and crews clear debris and fuel contamination from the road surface. Road closures following serious collisions can often last between six and twelve hours depending on the severity of the scene and recovery complexity.
