Chicago’s beloved Air and Water Show was pushed back for a second consecutive day on Sunday, as lingering cloud cover and scattered showers forced organisers to once again delay the start of the 67th annual lakefront spectacular.
The show, which typically runs from 10:30 am to 3 pm along the lakefront between Fullerton Avenue and Oak Street, was rescheduled to begin at noon and continue through to 5 pm on Sunday to preserve the full lineup, according to CBS Chicago. Organisers were working alongside the Federal Aviation Administration and its partners to monitor conditions and ensure safety before giving the go-ahead.

The bulk of overnight thunderstorm activity had cleared the city by early Sunday morning, though skies remained overcast, with further scattered showers expected ahead of a cold front that was forecast to move through and usher in drier conditions. It marked the second straight day that weather had disrupted the event: Saturday’s opening show was held up by close to two hours after heavy rain moved through the region, according to ABC7 Chicago.
Despite the repeated delays, crowds showed little sign of being deterred. Families and aviation enthusiasts began staking out spots on North Avenue Beach as early as 6:30 am on Sunday, hoping for clear skies once the front passed through. Spectator Alyssandra Chavez, who had been waiting near the beach on Saturday when the first delay was announced, said “we were like 15 minutes away before we got the notification it will be moved to 12” but added that her group had no intention of leaving.

This year’s show carries added significance, coinciding with celebrations of the nation’s 250th anniversary. Mayor Brandon Johnson said in a statement that the event stands as “one of Chicago’s defining summer traditions, bringing families, visitors and aviation enthusiasts together” along the city’s lakefront.
The 2026 edition features the return of the US Air Force Thunderbirds for a second consecutive year, a break from the tradition of alternating appearances with the US Navy Blue Angels. City officials said the switch came about because of a scheduling conflict on the Blue Angels’ side rather than any change in format. The programme also includes performances from more than a dozen military, civic and civilian demonstration teams, including a Coast Guard search and rescue display and an Illinois Air National Guard refuelling demonstration.

The Federal Aviation Administration has also imposed a temporary flight restriction covering a five-nautical-mile radius around North Avenue Beach for the duration of the show, barring unauthorised drones and unmanned aircraft from the airspace between 9 am and 5 pm each day. Officials warned that violators could face detainment or fines from law enforcement or FAA personnel.
Public parking remains unavailable at North Avenue Beach for the event, with the city continuing to urge attendees to use public transport to reach the lakefront. Admission to the show, one of the largest free events of its kind in the United States and typically drawing well over a million spectators across the weekend, remains free of charge.
Neither Chicago’s Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events nor the FAA had issued a further update on the schedule by Sunday afternoon.
