Algeria Election 2026: Algeria is preparing to hold its 2026 parliamentary election on July 2, when millions of citizens will vote to elect 407 members of the People's National Assembly (APN). The nationwide vote, announced by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, comes more than seven years after the 2019 Hirak protest movement reshaped the country's political landscape. More than 24.7 million registered voters, including hundreds of thousands living abroad, are eligible to participate.

Algeria will hold its parliamentary election on Thursday, July 2, 2026. Voters across the country will elect 407 lawmakers to the People's National Assembly, the lower house of Parliament. The election follows a presidential decree signed by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and is being supervised by the Independent National Authority of Elections (ANIE).
According to election authorities, more than 24.7 million registered voters are eligible to cast their ballots. This includes approximately 854,000 Algerian citizens living abroad, who will also be able to vote through designated overseas polling stations. Eligible voters must be registered on the official electoral roll before election day.
The 2026 Algerian parliamentary election does not have individual nationwide candidates like a presidential election. Instead, voters will choose from party lists and independent candidates contesting seats across the country.

Algeria uses an open-list proportional representation system for parliamentary elections. Under this system, voters select a political party list and can also express preferences for individual candidates on that list. Parliamentary seats are then distributed proportionally based on each party's share of votes in every constituency.
Voting began at 8:00 a.m. local time, with polls scheduled to close at 7:00 p.m. Election authorities, however, have the option to extend polling by one or two hours to 8:00 p.m. or 9:00 p.m., depending on weather conditions and voter turnout.
After polling closes, election officials will begin counting ballots at individual polling stations. The results will then be verified by local electoral commissions before being sent to the Independent National Authority of Elections (ANIE) for nationwide compilation. The authority will review the figures before announcing the official results.
Preliminary results from Algeria's parliamentary election are likely to be released between July 4 and July 5, 2026, while the final certified results are expected to be announced between July 9 and July 16, 2026.
More than 24.7 million registered voters are eligible to participate in the election, including around 854,000 voters living outside Algeria. However, turnout remains one of the biggest questions, as previous parliamentary elections recorded relatively low participation, with only 23% of eligible voters casting ballots in 2021.
The Hirak Movement began in February 2019 as a series of nationwide peaceful protests against then-President Abdelaziz Bouteflika's decision to seek another term in office despite his poor health. The demonstrations eventually forced Bouteflika to resign after nearly two decades in power.
Protesters also demanded broader political reforms, greater transparency, accountability and democratic governance. Although the movement transformed Algeria's political landscape, many activists argue that several of its key demands remain unfulfilled.
Official election results will be published by the Independent National Authority of Elections (ANIE) after vote counting and verification are completed. Results are expected to be available through ANIE's official announcements, state media outlets and government communication platforms.
Voters should ensure they are registered on the electoral roll and carry the required identification when visiting polling stations. They are encouraged to check the location of their assigned polling centre in advance and follow instructions issued by election officials.
Authorities have also urged citizens to participate peacefully and respect electoral rules throughout the voting process.
