With Modi and Xi Working for Peace, PLA Deployment Along LAC Plummets, According to 2025-2026 Annual Report of Ministry of Defence. The report came amid efforts by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping to thaw the relationship and ensure peace along the borders of the two nations.

Why Did PLA Deployment Along the LAC Fall?

According to the Ministry of Defence, 2025 saw a substantial decrease in the PLA deployments against India on its northern borders. This decrease came after the agreement reached between India and China in 2024 for disengagement, which includes actions in the Depsang and Demchok regions. This most recent evaluation does not indicate the end of the military standoff. The Ministry of Defence still considers the northern border “stable but sensitive.”

How Many PLA Forces Remain Near India’s Northern Border?

According to the report by the Defence Ministry of 2025-26, there were ten brigade-sized People’s Liberation Army formations stationed along the northern borders of the country, while ten others were stationed in training areas. From the figures presented above, there is a decline in deployment, yet there is still considerable military power in the region.

What Did Modi And Xi Discuss At The BRICS Summit 2026?

The summit was held in New Delhi on September 12 when Modi and Xi had a meeting on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit 2026 which was the first visit by Xi to India after seven years. Modi and Xi talked about building up the relations between the two countries, economy and trade, and keeping peace in the border area. Modi emphasized that peace and tranquillity in the border area are essential for further building up the relations between India and China.

What Is The Latest Update On India-China Military Talks?

The easing of relations has come alongside an ongoing level of military dialogue between both countries. In addition, India and China have held Corps Commander-level dialogue in the eastern region, indicating that both parties continue to engage through military dialogues.

Are India-China Border Tensions Over?

Not really. Recent trends seem to be those of de-escalation and prudent progress, rather than full normalisation. There has been a reduction in PLA troop deployments in 2025 after disengagement in 2024, and Modi-Xi engagements have been picking up steam in 2026.

Nevertheless, the border issue has not been resolved and China continues to keep its substantial military presence in depth. It is thus still appropriate to characterise the northern border as “stable but sensitive.”
