Denver: A massive wildfire broke out in Southern Colorado on Thursday, July 16, causing panic and disruption. As of now, no injuries or fatalities have been reported. However, authorities continue to warn residents about the ongoing wildfire risks as evacuation orders in several areas. According to the latest reports, the massive fire has burned 99,820 acres and reached 36% containment. Around 1,724 personnel are currently battling the Aspen Acres Fire, with crews working to protect communities and control the situation.
What is the current status of the Aspen Acres Fire?
The Aspen Acres Fire remains active, with officials warning that the wildfire continues to pose a potential threat to lives and property. Fire activity increased on the southwest side of the blaze on Wednesday afternoon as temperatures rose and winds strengthened. A spot fire crossed the first of two defensive lines under construction on the south side of the “chicken foot” area west of Rye. However, firefighters quickly responded with ground crews, dozers, and aircraft dropping water and retardant, successfully containing the spot fire. Drones equipped with infrared technology were also deployed overnight to detect hot spots, while crews, machinery, and aircraft returned to the area Thursday as officials expected increased fire activity during afternoon hours.

Fire crews are continuing operations across multiple areas of the fire. Near San Isabel, firefighters carried out strategic firing operations to reduce fuel between constructed defensive lines and the wildfire. Crews are also connecting dozer lines and hand lines while continuing structure protection work. At Saint Charles Peak, firefighters continued building primary and secondary firelines, while heavy equipment cleared vegetation along Forest Roads 360 and 369. Reconnaissance flights are being used to monitor heat across the fire area. On the northeast side of the wildfire, crews are conducting detailed searches for smouldering hot spots using chainsaws, hand tools, engines, pumps, and water to cool affected areas. Officials have urged drivers to use caution around Savage Road, Even Road, Ponderosa Pine Drive, San Isabel Drive, and Siloam Road, where firefighting operations are ongoing.
What roads are closed due to the Aspen Acres Fire?
Several road closures remain in effect because of wildfire operations.
- Colorado 165 is closed in both directions from Mile Point 0 (Mackenzie Junction) to Mile Point 28.9 (Mt. Baldy Road in Rye).
- Colorado 78 is also closed from Mile Point 0 (at CO 165) to Mile Point 8.83, where pavement meets the dirt road.
Which areas are under evacuation and what safety measures are in place?
Evacuation orders and pre-evacuation notices remain active across Custer, Pueblo, Fremont, and Huerfano counties. Officials said the wildfire remains dangerous due to dry conditions, strong winds, and highly flammable vegetation. The Custer County Sheriff’s Office has issued safety guidance for residents returning to homes with propane tanks. Officials advised residents not to approach damaged tanks with vehicles and to inspect them from a safe distance. Residents should avoid propane tanks showing fire damage, severe charring, hissing sounds, or gas smells. Anyone noticing signs of a leak should immediately leave the area and contact emergency services.
